2019 is nearly over and it has been a busy one; thousands of young workers have attended meetings, workshops and union activities all around the globe to build and grow our collective voice and 2020 looks to be even bigger. As we look back at a year in youth we also recognise the millions of transport workers who will be hard at work over this festive period. Most bosses will never know the true sacrifices that are made over the holiday season to ensure the world keeps on moving but we say thank you to all those who are giving up their time with family and loved ones so others can enjoy theirs.

Korean Confederation of Trade Unions

At 9:00am today, members of the KCTU-KPTU Korean Railway Workers' Union began an unlimited strike calling for 1) reintegration of the highspeed rail 2) increase of safety-related staff and improvement of the shift system to reduce working time 3) insourcing of outsourced jobs and improvement in conditions ofr workers in Korail subsidiaries 4) payment of back wages. Agreements on changing in the shift system was reached between Korail management and the KRWU last year, but the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance refuse to approve the plan to hire the needed additional 4600 workers. An an agreement was also reached on insourcing, but the Korail is not upholding its end. And integration of the high-seed rail was an election promise of the Moon Jae-in government. But the government is turning its back on railway workers and the public.
Due to South Korea's unfairly high essential service requirements (inconsistent with ILO standards), services will be running at the following rates: metro 90%, high speed 70%, conventional 60% freight 30%.

After 580 days in unlawful incarceration Lula is free, an enormous victory for trade unionists, the working class and the left wing in Brazil.

Brazil’s top court ruled that defendants may remain free while they exhaust appeals in criminal cases, paving the way for Lula and another 5,000 prisoners to be freed.

Lula’s freedom will restore hope to millions and offer a rebuttal to the rigid views that the Bolsonaro Government are attempting to impose in the country.
