Taj Chia Kutir Resort and Spa, Darjeeling.
Kerry reviews her recent stay at this lovely Taj hotel, surrounded by the tea plantations of Darjeeling in the Eastern Himalayas.
The hotel offers **wonderful views** from the large rooms with private balconies and spacious public areas. Chefs prepared a 'street food' buffet, allowing us to enjoy local specialties without the possible risks associated with eating from street vendors—all of it was delicious!
There is a lively bar area with live local entertainment, a **fantastic spa**, and an indoor heated swimming pool. Yoga and meditation sessions are offered in the mornings, adding to the peaceful ambiance.
This hotel also won our award for **best towel art**! The room attendant not only kept everything spotless but also surprised us daily with her delightful towel sculptures.

Just up the road is a **Private Bungalow**, the former home of the plantation owner, now managed by Taj.
The five-bedroom, all ensuite bungalow features large public spaces for dining and relaxing, an English garden for tea (of course!), and verandas with stunning views over the valley from both sides of the house. This is a fantastic opportunity for family groups or couples traveling together. The bungalow comes with its own staff and chef, and guests can also use all the facilities of the Taj Chia Resort and Spa during their stay.

Kerry attended a fabulous event at The International in Auckland last night. Hosted by Ponant and The Luxury Network, with delicious food by award winning chef Des Harris, and Billecart-Salmon champagne matches for each course, provided by Dhall and Nash. Sublime!

Kerry describes her journey to Gangtok. “Our journey from Bagdogra to Gangtok took almost 6 hours due to road repairs from last year's flash floods. Despite the challenge, the stunning vistas made it unforgettable. Comfortable vehicle, skilled driver, but not for the faint-hearted or those prone to motion sickness! We returned by helicopter—just 35 minutes!”

Kerry is in Gangtok, a hidden gem, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, in India’s northeast.
While there she is staying at the Taj Guris Kutir Resort and Spa, Gangtok. A beautiful new hotel. The decor and attention to detail is incredible, with such a calm and zen like ambiance. The rooms are stunning and large, with the luxury rooms having direct views to the mountain ranges. The light hitting Kanchenjunga (the third highest mountain in the world) at sunrise is spectacular. Kerry was at the Hooghly River, which is fondly called the Ganges by locals, and to them it is sacred. Flowing through the city, it’s a lifeline rich in history and culture. From spiritual rituals to the iconic Howrah Bridge, the river connects the city’s past and present, embodying both life and tradition. They come to bath. Vendors sell river mud balls and bottles or river water which people take home for luck, often incorporating the mud into the walls or foundations of a new home.

Kerry’s still in Kolkata visiting the Kumartuli, which is the traditional potters quarter, where they make the famous Durga Idols on the banks of the Hooghly River. This river is also known as the Lower Ganges. The area dates back to the 1700’s and there are around 700 businesses making dolls for festivals. The dolls or idols come in all shapes and sizes made of river clay and straw. They dry naturally and are then elaborately painted. The attention to detail on the facial make up is incredible. Once used they are returned to the river where they collapse, the clay returns to the river and the straw is collected and reused.

Kerry continues her review of her day sightseeing in Kolkata, which included a ride on a Heritage Tram, one of only 2 lines still operating in Kolkata. The experience needs some work but it would be a shame to lose the opportunity to make something out of the remaining lines.
The Queen Victoria Memorial, built between 1906 and 1921 by the government of India and dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, Empress of India from 1876 to 1901. The beautiful building is made of the same marble as the Taj Mahal and a stunning monument and museum in the central city.

Kerry is currently visiting the historic city of Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, which served as the capital of British India until 1911. Kolkata was once the second most important city in the British Empire after London, and its rich heritage still shines through. Kerry spent a busy day inspecting the luxurious Taj Bengal and Taj Raajkutir, followed by a ride on a heritage tram and a visit to the stunning Queen Victoria Memorial, made of the same marble as the Taj Mahal, with some other architectural similarities. Also, Kumaratoli and The God Factory on the banks of the Hooghly River, still known as the Ganges by the city dwellers.

Among the highlights of the day was a walk through the vibrant *Mullick Ghat Flower Market*. Such a vibrant colourful market. Wonderful to walk through there, amongst the local people going about their business. Flowers were being woven and arranged for weddings, temples, festivals. Everyone was very focused on the job at hand, still with a time for a smile and a chat with us.

The food in India was amazing and varied! Delicious treats were awaiting our arrival. Hosted dinners and lunches consisted of many many many courses in fabulous locations, dining venues, roof tops, and a palace pavilion complete with red carpet and fireworks. ! There was a lot of variety and dietary restrictions were well catered for. Imported wines are very expensive due to high tax. Visit India and you will eat well!

An iconic hotel in the middle of a lake! Such a gorgeous place. Taj manage the Lake Palace on behalf of the Royal family of Udaipur. The palace was designed and built as a palace and not a hotel, every room is different with its own layout and character. This hotel has hosted the ‘rich and famous over the years, and now me! We were upgraded on arrival. My suite was like an apartment - with 7 rooms! We were treated to a roof top dinner with gorgeous views back to the city palace. We were lucky that our visit coincided with a local festival. You may recognise this hotel from scenes in the James Bond Oc*****sy movie.

The Taj Palace Mumbai and then A a tour through Mumbai where the city never sleeps. Did try and cover it all starting at the crack of dawn, the fish market, the flower market, newspaper venders and the dabbawalla distribution. A taste of what Mumbai is all about. Time to say goodbye to India until next time ☺️
