The New Zealand government has recently unveiled the details of a new uncapped, 6-point system for the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa (SMC). This system set to be implemented from October 2023. The changes offer a simplified and more accessible route to residency for eligible individuals.
Starting from November 2023, the New Zealand government is implementing a new policy that allows a maximum continuous stay of 5 years on an AEWV (Accredited Employer Work Visa) for individuals who cannot demonstrate a pathway to residence.
To be eligible for a further AEWV, individuals will need to spend 12 months outside of New Zealand.
As a result, employers will need to shift their focus from visa renewals to actively supporting workers in attaining residency, as it will no longer be a sustainable long-term strategy.

These changes mean that most partners of temporary migrant workers who hold an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and Essential Skills Work Visa (ESWV) will have visa conditions which state they must work for an Accredited Employer in γany roleγ and be paid γat least median wage (or the applicable threshold if the role is covered by a sector agreement)γ.
