At 10:47am on the morning of 3 February 1931, the earth heaved upwards and swayed violently.

A fault running directly below Napier and southwest across the Heretaunga plains ruptured in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. The noise was compared to that of “an express train”.

Nearly all buildings in the central areas of Napier and Hastings were levelled, causing a significant loss of life. 157 people in Napier, 101 in Hastings, and 3 in Wairoa were killed.

Thousands more were injured and over 400 hospitalised.

Today we remember those lives lost. And we acknowledge the courage and determination of a community who rose from the rubble and ashes of that devastating event to imagine and create the very special City we call home today.
