The Takahē population continues to grow with the first two chicks from Greenstone Valley's new wild Takahē population hatching from their eggs.

🐣🌿 Important News: New Hope for Endangered Takahē! 🌱🐦
🎉 Exciting breakthrough! The first takahē chicks have hatched in Greenstone Valley, a new sanctuary for these rare birds. The Department of Conservation's efforts are paying off! 🥚🦜 In a daring move, 9 breeding pairs were introduced to this Otago site. Their mission? Establish a self-sustaining wild population. Since August, 6 out of 9 pairs have built nests, each cradling two precious eggs. And now, we're celebrating the hatching of the first chicks! 🐤🎊 Ranger Glen Greaves is optimistic. Despite relocation stress, these takahē are thriving in their new home. More eggs are expected to hatch soon! This marks the third wild takahē population. It's a significant step towards saving these magnificent birds from extinction. 🌍❤️

Amazing news! Walk the Greenstone with us :)

BREAKING NEWS!

We currently have a team in the field who have confirmed that we have our first takahē nests in the Greenstone Valley - five of them in fact!

Takahē were only re-introduced into this new site in August this year, just weeks before the start of the takahē breeding season. Although we hoped they might nest this year, we suspected the stress of the transfer and settling into a new site might have an impact on breeding. Apparently not! This is a great indication that takahe are settling well into their new home.
