As you can see in this smudge, the Wild West coast of the South Island lives up to its name. The daunting coast coast line, it’s steep fortress like cliffs, battered daily by enormous waves of frigid water rolling in from the Antarctic.

We were lucky to land the whirlybird on small west coast beach, like castaways the passengers were fearful of starving, lucky their experienced and intrepid guide from OMINZ was able to scape together a meagre feed of crayfish, paua and whitebait…
