Yes believe it or not - Milford Sound is not actually a Sound and another fun fact - none of Fiordland's 14 "Sounds" are actually Sounds either 🤨

"Having previously worked as a travel agent (Frances) and a national park ranger (Russell), Milford Sound and Fiordland National Park in New Zealand had been on our bucket list for a while. We both understood that Milford Sound was an iconic location in the South Island, but we never could have imagined how much this beautiful part of the world would captivate us and leave us with a new favourite word - "wow!"

One experience was meeting a Kea Parrot, another dream of Russell's who loves to take photos of birds. You could see Toby constantly scanning the road and skies ahead to find one and finally we had our chance at the last photo stop of the day. We were then able to spend almost 15mins just watching and engaging with this beautiful large bird and its cheeky behaviour. Toby never rushed us away, even though we were heading back to Te Anau. Every guest appreciated this moment."

A lot of enjoyment was had this day with Frances, Russell & the other guests on board 💚

Winter is a great time to capture this beauty as we leave the side of Lake Te Anau and head towards Fiordland National Park, on route to Milford Sound.

Te Anau Downs station is really the last part of normal civilisation before we descend into the depths of a rainforest.

We stop here for a moment to enjoy views over Lake Te Anau and feel the warmth of the sun rising behind our backs before moving on towards our adventure.

Introducing our inspiration for Luxe Tours and youngest staff member- Luka Pascoe!

Luka is son to owners Katelyn & Toby. In his first short three years, Luka has seen all of what our guests will see when travelling with Luxe and has even scaled some of the mountains surrounding Milford Sound.

For guests who have travelled with Luxe Tours and enjoyed our onboard lollies - well Luka and his friends do the stickers on those compostable plastic packets (as well as taste test a few too many 😅)

Taking family owned to a new level!

When Luka isn’t doing stickers, you will find him exploring the outdoors with his parents, riding his bike or a new found love - swimming 💚

Our beloved Kiwi bird is under threat, especially from an Australian protected species.

At Luxe Tours we are often asked "will we see a Kiwi today?"

The answer is almost 100% no ❌

Not only are Kiwi nocturnal, but their numbers have dramatically fallen from an estimated 12-million in the 1800's, to today's low of 68,000.

In this Part 1 article, we explore the plight of the Kiwi, its main threats and what is being done to try and protect them. Inside is a video of a Kiwi on the Milford Track who had HAD ENOUGH 😤 and fought back!

❄️ The last of our Milford Sound in Winter series ❄️

A Cruise in Milford Sound in Winter is actually remarkably different. Here are a few key differences and important things to consider

⛴️ There are few crowds on boats.
🐬 Some wildlife such as dolphins come into the sound more often to seek shelter from the sea.
😌 The fiord is often very calm with glass like conditions.

👉 It can be very cold, bring a warm jacket and under-layer.
👉 Allow more time on the Milford Road, but we highly recommend a tour.
👉 Book in advance, tour and cruise companies reduce their schedules.
👉 Go on a boat/tour that offers a warm meal to enjoy.
