Corpus Christi

The Feast of "Corpus Christi" figures prominently in the festive calendar of the city (May or June - 9 weeks after Easter), is one of the most lavish religious festivals of Cusco so for this occasion the city looks very crowded by people coming from other confines. The origin of this festival dates back to 1247, when San Miguel de Liege (Belgium) was held for the first time. "Corpus Christi" means "Body of Christ" and was instituted to solemnly commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist, which in turn represents the Body of Christ; should take place next Thursday at the octave of Pentecost, that is, the day following the feast of the Holy Trinity Thursdays; This day becomes on Thursday, counting nine weeks after Holy Thursday. It was established in this area of the Andes after 1533 but officially established in Qosqo by Viceroy Toledo in 1572, with its famous "Ordinances".

Holiday Qoyllur Rit´i - may 22, 2016 (24 may central day)

The residents from district Ocongate (Quispicanchis), in the department of Cusco, perform a ritual whose external symbol is the image of Christ, but whose real objective is the integration of man and nature, people of this place are devotees of Taytacha Qoyllur Rit'i (lord of the Shining Snow). This is an old religious custom practiced only by the habitants of the Andes. Every year, a few days before the celebration of Corpus Christi, every small village or clan send a delegation with colorful dancers and "pabluchas" to the Chapel of lord of Qoyllur rit´i.

The ritual, associated with fertility of the land and the worship of Apus (hills, tutelary gods), is part of one of the holidays of America's largest indigenous nations. The main ceremony is held at the foot of Mount Ausangate, the ritual is a pilgrimage of shepherds, traders and curious who gather at the shrine of Sinakara in the village of Mawayany, at 4600 meters above sea level.

Inti Raymi

In privileged place of the sacred capital, the Inka Pachacutec ordered to build the Qorikancha, a lavish temple dedicated to revere the Sun god to whom the Incas called it Apu P`unchao or Apu Inti, in whose honor was consecrated the imposing party INTI RAYMI, which reaches contours of solemnity and splendor, as described by the most important chroniclers.

There were several reasons that prompted the Inca civilization to make sacrifices and offerings to the sun. One was that the Inca, as the Cuzco nobility, were considered natural children of the Sun, to obey his existence, and should correspond with sacrifices and offerings. On the other hand, if the corn harvest was good, I had to thank him and if it was bad, he had to beg for the coming year be compensated with a good production.

In June (winter solstice) The sun went away, the cold increased in the early mornings the water froze, therefore, had to ask the Sun return, at twilight it would not continue moving north. Finally, we had to attest to the god Inti, eternity and total surrender of their children, with submission and respect.

More than six centuries ago, the Inka Pachakuteq instituted the Feast of the Sun God. The Cusqueños are still representing the Inti Raymi with the same fervor with which their ancestors made in the splendid time of the Incas.

The Inti Raymi, contemporary version is from the June 24, 1944, when the festivities were instituted in the city in memory of their ancient origin and cradle of civilization Gran Inka.
