Potamotrygon motoro,
"ocellated river ray"
Locally known as raya motoro
This is why we do the stingray shuffle when exploring the waters of the Amazon River and rainforest.
Btw, that bubbling is gas from decomposing organic material below the sand.
Not ray farts as I anticipate the comment.

In a couple of months, this will all be under water.

(Myrciaria dubia) "Camu-Camu" is the name of this special fruit.
There are a few species, some arboreal others are shrub like.
This native Amazonian plant has fruits with the highest content of vitamin c in the whole world.
Touted as a superfood.
I planted many of these shrubs in my port over the years.
Half the year they are submerged in the floodwaters, only the tops exposed that produce the fruits.
I was selectively trimming a rather thick section and managed to cut a branch that was heavy with fruits.
I guess we are having juice tomorrow.

Pair of Caluromys lanatus ( brown eared wooly opossum) were making a ruckus early yesterday afternoon.
The screeching and fighting/flirting lasted well into the night.

That little creek is the Oran.
For those who know, this is a shocker.
An extended dry season has been announced.
It could be another 30-40 days before the water levels come up again.
Completely normal on a paleogeographical timescale. #amazonriver #peru

Here is a barge making a last ditch effort to swing it's bow into the channel of the Itaya River.
Not sure what it takes to do a maneuver like that.
Courage? Brains? Stupidity?
Desperation?
A combination of the four?
Or is this SOP 🤔😬.
Wild,
this is our low water season folks. Water probably won't start ascending until end of September.
It's gonna be a loooong moth of easily avoidable hardships.

Those "cold" southern winds are also bringing the smoke from Brazil.
Horrible air quality here in Iquitos.
That red color is particulates.
Smoke, generated by fires.
Provoked fires.
Not the swidden agriculture type that heals over quickly.
This is large scale and irresponsible.
These are not fire dependent ecosystems.
A forest fire in the Amazon is nearly always provoked
Thanks Brazil!

Good Tuesday morning to everyone.
Last week, I almost scraped my shin on this pesky bone protruding out of the coquina.
First glance seemed to be a rib bone of some sort but on closer inspection, there were complex canals resembling mandibular foramen.
Hmmm.
Any early guesses before I post done sequential videos ?
Found on the Napo River , district of Masan, Loreto, Perú.
Pair of owl monkeys feeding on Inga fruits next to my house the other night.
(Aotus vociferans)
Regionally known as:
" musmuqui "
Locally known as
"Buri Buri" or "mono diablo"
Yeah, that's right
Devil monkey 👹🐒
Many woodsman have told me personal stories about how their encampments were raided by groups of these monkeys when out on "mitayo"( hunting trips).
One account claims that he and his wife were woken by banging para and pans, follow by the shredding of their mosquito net which they had to abandon.
The husband received a note on the leg and had to beat them back with whatever was within reach, a pot, a stick.
They remained vigilant the whole night.
They claimed the monkeys were screeching and hooting at them from the ground and the trees.
Wild ! Absolutely Wild!
