Bohol Tarsiers (Definitely Incredible)

Tarsiers are adorable cute animals with giant eyes and immensely soft fur. You can watch tarsiers in two centers in Bohol island: Tarsier Sanctuary near Corella and Tarsier Conservation Area near Loboc.

Tarsier Sanctuary

We recommend Tarsier Sanctuary, located in a forrest between Corella and Sikatuna cities, because it’s a place where tarsiers live in the wild. They are free to do whatever they want, even to leave the territory of the sanctuary. Staff in the center only controls population, treats and feeds, and makes bypassing find tarsiers current location every morning. Tarsiers are nocturnal animals and they are practically inactive during daytime. Usually they sit at the same place the whole day. Those who were found this morning are shown to tourists this day.

For visitors allotted the only one hectare of the total area of 10 hectares. So every time you hope that this day there are more tarsiers, and they are close. But nobody can guarantee it. We’ve seen only three tarsiers. One of them was close enough, so we could look at it very carefully and make pictures. It was enough to assume that we did not come in vain. Incredibly huge eyes and facial expressions muzzles can not leave anyone indifferent! Taking to hands, stroking and scaring of tarsiers are strictly prohibited. Their comfort is carefully guarded.

Tarsiers are officially recognized as endangered species. The dwindling of Philippine forests – the Philippine tarsier’s natural forest habitat – has posed a grave and significant threat to the survival of the Philippine tarsier. Also they have more natural enemies now. Some time ago they were snakes and owls, now even dogs and cats.

Tarsiers are protected by a special law prohibiting buying and selling animals. In 1997 Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc., was based in Tagbilaran, Bohol island. Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella mentioned above were created on money of the fund. This center is home for a half of the world population of tarsiers. And it’s only 100 animals!

Contrary to a popular belief that tarsiers are shivery and defenseless, they are desperate and freedom-loving animals. Tarsiers do not do well in captivity. As a rule it leads to the death of the animal in a short time. Tarsiers can not get used to captivity, in an attempt to escape, they often break their heads against the bars of cells.

In the natural environment tarsier requires quite a large area – about one hectare. They are desperate to protect it. If other tarsiers were noticed in the territory – a fight is inevitable. Often it leads to the death of one of the animals.

Virgin Island (Definitely Wow)

Virgin Island is one of the several islands included in Bohol Government’s jurisdiction. It is located 15-20 minutes away from Panglao Island in the Philippines. This is known to local as the Virgin Island because nobody lives here and the place is not always visited by tourists even though it’s opened to the public a long time ago. Virgin Island is one of the many islands in the Philippines where a big area of the beach sink during high tide and only the palm trees in the middle of the island are visible.

Known to many locals as the “hidden oasis”, Virgin Island is clearly an attraction due to its long stretch of white sand beach during low tide which spans around 1 hectare. The problem during shallow waters is that some motorized outrigger boats can’t dock in the island because a lot of sea plants surrounding the area near the docking station will stick to the propeller causing it to malfunction. There’s no other docking station except for this single area of the island because most of the parts have very shallow water even during high tide which can cause the outrigger boats to get caught on the underwater rocks or sands.

Some locals using their paddles to propel their outrigger boats usually sells pearls and shells that have edible meat. In Virgin Island, one can see different kinds of sea creatures from a variety of fishes, sea urchins or “swaki”, shells, star fish and a lot more. Sometimes Boholanos also sells edible “swaki” which is called as the “fear factor” food because many people haven’t tried it. It is usually found in high end Japanese restaurants and dipped in a soy sauce or wasabi to make it taste even better.

Relax and enjoy at Virgin Island! Even though it’s not that quite amazing (for some) compared to the other tourist attractions in Panglao such as the Bee Farm, Shell Museum or Hinagdanan Cave, experiencing the white sand of the island and its shallow waters can definitely take the stress out of your system.

Loboc River Cruise (Definitely Amazing)

Loboc River is one of top destinations in the island province of Bohol, aside from the Chocolate Hills and its Tarsiers. This river runs inland through the town of Loboc and other towns on Bohol island and opens to the sea at the southern part of the island.

The Loboc River Cruise offers visitors to experience the beauty and serenity in the most beautiful section of the river that runs through Loboc. Cruises start near the historic Loboc Church at the town proper where many boats are docked and different stores and restaurants line up the riverside. Some of these restaurants used to offer visitors the chance to take pictures with the shy tarsiers.

Loboc is about 30 minutes ride from the city of Tagbilaran where the Tagbilaran Airport is located and the Port of Tagbilaran allows visitors to reach Cebu City by ferry.

Each cruise boat on the river is made of two boats where a platform carries a mini restaurant. This floating structure is propelled by a smaller pump boat. The cruise on the river includes buffet lunch which makes this destination peak up during lunch time where most city tours include the cruise in their itinerary.

The cruise takes about one hour long through the twisting river. And it starts with the view of the Loboc River on one side of the river. At the start of the cruise, people are invited to start lunch by feasting on the buffet that is served. Guests are also offered different tropical drinks include fresh coconut. Also on board each restaurants, entertainment is provided where singers are also on board

The water of the river is greenish and calm. And every now and then floating restaurants come by as they return back to the wharf.

As the cruise goes upstream, both sides of the river gets greener where the forest is lusher and palm trees grow on each side. Some of the taller palm trees extend to the center of the river. And on this palm trees children are able to climb where they jump off or swing on ropes tied on the trunks of this coconut trees. Children jumping from the trees swim on the river and some ride on the sides of the floating restaurants that pass by.

The river cruise ends at the Busay waterfalls which is just a low waterfall where the water of the river comes from. On this section, some floating rafts are located where men with guitars offer guests some music while experiencing the sound of water from the waterfall.

From here, the floating cruise turns around and back to the wharf near the Loboc church. There are times that the voices of the famous Loboc Church Choir may be heard by the visitors on cruise.
