Nyika Various perspectives on issues of diplomacy, international relations, technology, as well as a simple analysis of local newspapers' headlines. Thank you!

When we were thinking of launching a blog we thought a lot about the name and settled for Nyika as we intend to present to you an exciting different approach to issues of international relations and diplomacy as well as matters concerning technology. We picked Nyika, which means wilderness in Kiswahili, as it is more often than not issues which matter most to us in Africa are easily left out of th

e headlines, misreported or under reported. We as well intend to be a platform for those students of international relations and diplomacy as we will explore the many issues which are important to the two disciplines, opinion pieces and issues presented in a simple way that even those who are not experts at these matters can easily understand or make sense of the issues discussed or presented to them. We will also offer a review of local newspapers and what caught the eyes of the Editors of those newspapers, as well as provide strange and "light-hearted" stories and pictures from around the world. Please travel with us.

TANZANIA'S DIPLOMACY UNDER MAGUFULI
President John Magufuli (third from right) and his guest, President Idris Derby of Chad when he arrived in the country on Sunday, 27 November 2016 for a two-day visit.

Since coming to power, President John Magufuli set out to follow a different path when it came to traveling abroad, compared to his immediate predecessor in office, Jakaya Kikwete; a man who traveled a lot to the point his critics dubbed him a “globe-trotting” president.

During Kikwete’s time a lot of the world’s political heavyweights paid him a visit in Dar; from America’s George W. Bush to outgoing president, Barack Obama to China’s Xi Jinping. At that time, the country was courted vigorously by the World’s powerful. BULLETPROOF BATHROOM

Imagine living in a house which is bulletproof. You will be forgiven for thinking that happens in the movies only, or that only Mafia and crime lords would be keen to take up the offer. In India, a Chief minister of Telangana built himself a new residence with bulletproof bathroom! Of all places, he picked a bathroom to be bulletproof!

The new residence cost taxpayers $ 7.3 million.

Of course he is not the only politician to take taxpayers for ride with their money. South Africa's president Jacob Zuma caused outrage after it emerged he had spent $ 23 million on the upgrade of his private residence in Nkandla back in 2014, justifying some of the upgrades such as a swimming pool as "safety measures". After countless denials the South Africa's constitutional court ordered him to repay the money spent on his rural residence upgrade as failure to do so was unconstitutional.
