In June and July, wildebeest make their way across the Grumeti River moving northwest through the Serengeti plains in search of fresh grazing and water. In January the herds begin make their way to the southern of the Serengeti to feed on the short green grasses of the plains just what the wildebeest need for their energy-demanding calving season. Approximately 8,000 wildebeest are born every day during the peak calving season from early January to late February.

The calving season also introduces a host of predators looking to make a quick meal of the vulnerable calves. Lion, hyena and cheetah show up in large numbers to patrol the grasses, waiting for the perfect time to make a kill. But an easy kill isn’t always guaranteed. Predators have to deal with extremely over-protective mothers who will do everything in their power to protect their young. Tens of thousands of zebras and gazelles have accompanied the wildebeest on their trek and are taking advantage of safety in numbers to drop their young too.
