8 Best Things to Do in Tanzania for a Vacation

Tanzania is a country rich in natural beauty, wildlife, and cultural diversity. It offers incredible experiences from witnessing the Great Migration to enjoying the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. Whether you’re a nature lover, adventurer, or beach-goer, Tanzania has something for everyone.

Here are the 8 best things to do during your vacation in Tanzania:

1. Witness the Great Migration – Serengeti National Park
The Great Migration is one of the most iconic wildlife events on Earth, where millions of wildebeest and zebras journey across the savannah, pursued by predators. This natural spectacle is often compared to watching a National Geographic documentary live. It’s an experience that offers breathtaking moments and memorable wildlife encounters.
Best time to visit: July to October (dry season)
Tip: Hire a knowledgeable guide for the best wildlife viewing.

2. Explore Spice Farms and Beaches in Zanzibar
Zanzibar, known for its spice farms and stunning beaches, is a must-visit for travelers seeking a mix of cultural and coastal experiences. Learn about the spice trade’s history, indulge in local cuisine, and explore the rich cultural heritage of Stone Town.
What to do: Visit spice farms, explore Nungwi and Kendwa beaches, snorkel, or scuba dive in the clear waters.
The best time to visit: is June to October (dry season).

3. Dive into the Clear Waters of Pemba Island
For scuba diving enthusiasts, Pemba Island is a hidden gem. This less-visited island boasts pristine coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine life. Pemba’s dive sites, like Misali Island and Fundu Gap, are perfect for exploring underwater caves and dramatic drop-offs.
Tip: Dive with a local guide who knows the waters well.

4. Conquer the Roof of Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, is an adventure like no other. The breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment from reaching the summit are unforgettable.
Best routes: Machame and Marangu routes.
Tip: Acclimatize properly, choose a reputable operator, and pack appropriately for summit night.

5. Visit Ngorongoro Crater – A Natural Wonder
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, hosting over 25,000 animals including the Big Five. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a unique safari experience, where wildlife can be easily spotted in the dense, enclosed habitat.
Tip: Visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum to learn about human history in the region.

6. Explore the Baobabs and Wildlife of Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is famous for its massive herds of elephants and iconic baobab trees. The Tarangire River attracts a high density of wildlife, making it an excellent spot for game viewing, especially during the dry season.
Tip: Embark on a guided walking safari for a closer look at the wildlife and landscape.

7. Spot Tree-Climbing Lions at Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara is one of the few places in the world where you can see tree-climbing lions. In addition, this park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to hundreds of bird species.
Tip: Bring binoculars for bird watching and spotting lions in the trees.

8. Experience the Untamed Wilderness of Ruaha National Park
For those seeking solitude and abundant wildlife, Ruaha National Park is a perfect destination. Known for its large elephant population and lion pride, Ruaha offers endless safari opportunities in its vast, unspoiled wilderness.
Tip: Visit during the dry season (June to November) for optimal wildlife viewing, and try a walking safari for an immersive experience.

How much does it cost to climb Kilimanjaro?

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro comes with a wide range of prices based on the type of experience, services, and amenities you choose. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the different price tiers and what to expect at each level:
1. Group Shared Tours ($1,200 - $1,500)
- This is the cheapest option available for climbing Kilimanjaro, where climbers join a group tour.
- By doing so, many costs such as guide fees, park entrance fees, camping fees, and equipment rentals are divided among group members, significantly lowering the per-person cost.
2. Budget Kilimanjaro climbs (US$1500-2000):
- At this price range, you may find companies offering climbs for as low as $1500, but the quality of service may be compromised.
- The cost includes park fees, meals on the mountain, a porter, and a guide.
- Treks in this range may be shorter (e.g., five days), which is not recommended for safe acclimatization.
- The treatment of porters and crew may be poor, and wages low.
- It is advisable to avoid companies offering very low prices, as they may not ensure crew well-being.
- A slight improvement can be seen at the higher end of this range ($2000) with better service quality.
3. Budget Kilimanjaro climbs (US$2000-2500):
- This range provides more choices and partners with Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), ensuring better treatment of staff.
- Quality of treks improves, with potential private toilets and mess tents, better food, and oxygen availability.
- While the service may not be top-notch, it should be sufficient for a successful climb.
- Opting for a six-day trek within this range is common, though 7 or 8 days are preferred for safe acclimatization.
4. Mid-range Kilimanjaro treks (US$2500-3500):
- Companies in this range offer good value and various options, with a focus on safety and staff well-being.
- Some may include additional services like unusual routes, safaris, or sightseeing tours.
- Safety procedures tend to be superior, with the use of pulse oximeters and well-rehearsed evacuation plans.
- Excellent customer service is expected, and complaints should be addressed promptly to ensure a positive experience.
5. Luxury Kilimanjaro trek operators (US$3500 and above):
- Companies in this price bracket are Kilimanjaro specialists with extensive experience and highly trained guides.
- Kiliserengoro Tours and Safaris L.T.D partnership is common, guaranteeing fair treatment of staff.
- Luxuries such as showers, high-quality food, and top-notch safety procedures are included.
- Attention to detail and customer satisfaction are paramount, and these companies excel in providing a luxurious experience.
Based on your budget and desired level of service, it is recommended to consider the mid-range options ($2000-3000) for a well-rounded climbing experience with a good balance of quality services and value for your money.

Starting at Lemosho in the west and crossing the most interesting parts of the mountain, it joins the Machame route above Shira Camp on day 4, then from Ice Camp it climbs to the summit via Stella Point. Descending is through Mweka.

Programs and Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha - Londorosi Gate - Mti Mkubwa Camp
Departing from Moshi/Arusha, the drive will take you through welcoming mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead. Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa - Shira Camp
After a good sleep and a hearty breakfast, we emerge from the rainforest and continue on an ascending path. We leave the forest behind as the trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures begin to drop.
The starting elevation is 2785m/9137ft and the end elevation is 3504m/11,496ft, which means the altitude gained is 719m.

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp - Shira Hut: 6.9km/4.3mi | 5-7hrs | Moorland
On this day, we will explore the Shira plateau for a full day. It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciated peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little-used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.
Elevation: 3504m/11,496ft to 3895m/12,779ft
Altitude gained: 391m.

Day 4: Shira Hut - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp: 10.1km/6.3mi | 4-6hrs | Semi Desert
Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak before we then continue southeast towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after the tower, we come to a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continued to descend overnight at Barranco Camp.
Elevation: 3895m/12,779ft to 3986m/13,077ft
Altitude gained: 91m.

Day 5: Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp 5.2km/3mi | 4-5hrs | Alpine Desert.
After breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge up to the adventurous Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility, and strength of your crew zip over this wall with what appears such ease. Overnight at Karanga Camp.
Elevation: 3986m/13,077ft to 4034m/13,235ft
Altitude gained: 48m.

Day 6: Hike Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp: 3.3km/2mi | 4-5hrs | Alpine Desert
We continue up towards Barafu Camp and once reached you have now completed the South Circuit, which offers a variety of breathtaking views of the summit from many different angles. An early dinner and rest as we prepare for summit night. Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Elevation: 4034m/13,235ft to 4662m/15,295ft
Altitude gained: 628m.

Day 7: Barafu Camp - Summit: 4.86km/3mi up | 5-7hrs - Mweka Camp: 13km /8mi Down | 5-6hrs | Glaciers, Snow Capped Summit
Excitement is building as morning comes with an early start at midnight. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. As we continue our way to the summit, stay warm. With a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction, we ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. You will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise during your short rest here. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From here on your remaining one-hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, you are likely to encounter snow all the way. After reaching Uhuru, you will take photos, enjoy celebrations, and maybe a few tears of joy. Take a few moments to enjoy this incredible accomplishment. We begin our steep descent down to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a very brief rest. Overnight Mweka Camp.
Elevation: 4662m/15,295ft to 5895m/19,341ft

Day 8: Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate - Arusha
After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy, and steep, we highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner, and celebrations! Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
