"The Church oil paintings were last restored in Soviet times.

"Over the past 40 years since the last restoration effort, the murals have sustained a lot of damage. ... Large fragments of the base have gone loose while the plaster with the murals has peeled off from the masonry..." says the art conservator Leonid Kolodnytskyi.

The damaged areas are now being reinforced by a layer of wax, which is heated by a special device. The restoration works are expected to be completed by the end of summer."
