Antonov AN-225

Thousands of visitors are expected at Perth Airport to see the world’s biggest plane, the Antonov AN-225, next weekend. The Ukrainian-built and operated monster is expected to arrive at 10am tomorrow week and Perth Airport and Antonov Airlines have ensured the public can see the giant jet. It is a plane of records because it has set so many — that in itself is an aviation record. Built 30 years ago to transport the Soviet space shuttle the Buran, the plane is now used for cargo no other plane can handle. With no payload, the AN-225 can fly non-stop for 18 hours covering more than 15,000km but fully loaded the range falls dramatically to about two hours.
