DID YOU KNOW

The Iteso belong to the Cush*tic group of people called the Ateker,
Ateker is a larger cluster of ‘Itunga’ comprising of 6 subgroups;

1. The Dongiro,Nyangatom of Ethiopia,
2. Turkana of Kenya,
3. Toposa of South Sudan,
4. Jie in Uganda
5. Karamojong and
6. Iteso of Uganda

However, due to effects left by the Ateker people in places they lived, people they got into contact, some tribes possess lots of similar cultures with them but Iteso are relatively different e.g., Oromo of Ethiopia, the lotuko, the barre, and the kakwa of South Sudan just like the Maa community (Masai and Samburu of Kenya) are close to the Iteso culture and language.

Like everything that has an origin, today, we want to know about the origin of the Iteso people.

All people in the world, including Iteso, are descendants of Noah. Noah had three sons: namely, Shem, Ham and Japheth (Genesis 9:18-19).

Ham gave birth to Cush (Ethiopia), Mizraim (Egypt), Put (Libya) and Canaan(Israel cannanites) (Genesis 10:6).

Cush and his sons (Nimrod,Seba, Ramah & Sabtecha) later went to settle in the land of cush called Ethiopia or Abyssinia. These people were crop farmers and pastoralists, the search for water, fertile land and pasture for themselves and their animals, in 1300 AD some of Cush’s descendants who later came to be known as ITUNGA left Ethiopia and moved southwards.

In today's case study, we dig deep to know who are the Iteso?

WHO ARE THE ITESO?

Iteso are the legendary section of the Ateker people whose origin is from the Habesha people of the Solomonid Dynasty in the historical Abyssinia Empire (present Ethiopia and Eritrea).

The Monarchy covered Southern Egypt, Eastern Sudan, Yemen and Western Saudi Arabia from 980 B.C. to its collapse in September 1974 due to a coup led by Mengistu Haile Mariam of the Derg committee who jailed and murdered king Haile Selassie.

The famous Kiganda dannce (Nankasa, Baakisiimba, Muwogola)

This is a social gathering dance of the Baganda people.

Is a traditional folk dance that originated in the palace of the King of Buganda, situated near by the Lake Victoria, the home of Nalubaale, the wife of Lubaale, one of the gods of the Baganda people.
A former Bugandan king (kabaka) greatly enjoyed the local beer, tonto omwenge. Tonto is made from banana plants, and the name is taken from the Lugandan word tontomera, which means, "Do not knock me over".
At one gathering, this king drank too much of the beer and became quite happy. (In Buganda, it is taboo to say that the king is drunk; you can only say that the king is very happy.) The king then started praising the people who had made the beer, saying abaakisiimba, which means "those who planted the bananas", and bebaakiwoomya, "they made it delicious".
The musicians at this gathering created an abaakisiimba rhythm that imitated the words of the king, who was so happy and relaxed that he began to move and dance. While the musicians mimicked the king's words on their drums, the women imitated the king's movements, which eventually became a dance that is now performed throughout Buganda by all generations. There are three major movements in this dance: the first is Nankasa, the second is Baakisiimba, and the third is Muwogola.
