Meet Stella, a curious and playful six-year-old in the African elephant herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. She’s the youngest in the group, but she’s surrounded by older and wiser females who take special care of her, like her doting mom Donna.

Stella’s fun and independent spirit shines through in all she does, including natural behaviors like trumpeting. That’s the sound elephants make when they are communicating with each other. They even communicate with subsonic frequencies our ears cannot hear.

Next time you’re on Kilimanjaro Safaris, be sure to look for – and listen for – Stella, Donna and the rest of the herd as they communicate with each other. It’s an experience you won’t forget!

Young male gorillas are known as “blackbacks.” Male gorillas reach maturity at 13-15 years old (later than females, who reach maturity at 8-10 years old). Beginning around age 10, males will start to develop the features we recognize in a silverback, including powerful muscles, large canine teeth, elongated heads, and a silver saddle of hair on their backs.

Hello our dear friends of AFRICA
We found ourselves in an emergency situation in the early hours of Friday morning, when part of the orphanage roof was blown off during heavy rain with much wind, leaving a big hole above where the children sleep, which needed urgent attention but also required payment which we have only been able to pay half of. The amount still owing is 143,024UGX (about $54AUD/$40USD) which we have been demanded to pay by tomorrow and so we are just wondering if any of our friends might be able to help us please with the remaining cost of the bill.

The children weren’t able to sleep in the big room they all sleep in at the orphanage home, due to no protection from the rain that was coming through the big hole in the roof. So it was most urgent that the roof get fixed that same day, if at all possible, as it’s our rainy season here in Uganda and we have been having so much heavy rain and wind and it has also been raining most days. The 17 children and 3 adults all needed to be cramped up in one very small room for 2 nights, which wasn’t anywhere big enough for us all to comfortably sleep. The wind must have been so strong that blew the iron sheeting off, as us 3 adults spent many hours searching for the iron sheeting but couldn’t find them anywhere.
We didn’t know how we were going to be able to get our roof fixed as we didn’t have any money to pay for the materials needed and pay the builder for his labour. But thanks to a dear friend who sent us a donation on Friday, as soon as she became aware of the urgent and concerning situation, we had over half of the cost needed to buy the materials, repair the roof and pay for the builder for his labour!! The builder and I were very busy working together on the roof on Saturday, so we could complete putting on the new iron sheets, even though we didn’t have the remainder of the money needed, before more rain came. The builder said it was his discount to us, being as we didn’t have the total amount needed but he has demanded payment of the remainder of the bill by tomorrow.
The costs for repairing the roof are as follows:-
6 iron sheets need replacing @ 20,000 each = 120,000
Nails 70,000
Labour 100,000
2 Timbers @ 25,000 = 50,000
Which totals 340,000
But the good news is that we only have 143,024 (about $54AUD/$40USD) left to pay, thanks to our dear friend who donated over half of the money needed. If anyone is interested in helping, please just inbox me for the details and information on how to send.
