Shroud in mystery, mist and legend, the Rwenzori Mountains, Africa's highest and most dramatic mountain range remain largely unexplored and off the beaten track for adventure lovers. Uganda health officials have declared the end to the recent Ebola outbreak. The announcement was made Wednesday 11 January 2023 by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Uganda’s health minister. The announcement follows a 42-day period without any new cases. This time is twice the maximum incubation period of the virus, a World Health Organization benchmark for a country to be declared Ebola-free. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO head, has congratulated Uganda for its "robust and comprehensive response" to the outbreak, ending it less than four months. He says lessons learned and the systems put in place for this outbreak will protect Ugandans and others in the years ahead.

Huge relief as Uganda finally discharged its last known Ebola patient from hospital, a senior health official has said, raising hopes that an outbreak that has killed at least 56 people would end soon. Officials first confirmed the outbreak in September and said it was the Sudan strain of the virus, which kills 40 to 60 percent of those it infects and for which there is no proven vaccine.

King Oyo of the Tooro Kingdom has today summitted Margherita (5109m / 16762ft above see level) the highest peak in the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda. These mountains are the third highest after Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya.

Tooro is one of the Kingdoms in Uganda. Though a republic, Uganda's constitution recognises kingdoms as cultural institutions - with some kingdoms going back over 600 years.

Rwenzori is derived from Rwenzura/Rwenjura which means “Rain-Maker” or “Cloud-King” in the local Rukonzo language. Later in AD150, the Greek geographer Ptolemy wrote of a snowcapped mountain range in the heart of Africa, calling them the Mountains of the Moon. The mountains are a major contributor to the waters of the Nile River which starts its journey in Uganda.

The 995 km² Mountains National Park is a World Heritage Site with six distinct mountains, Stanley, Speke, Baker, Emin, Gessi and Savioa. The oldest person to reach the Margherita Peak Ms Beryl Park aged 78 in 2010.
