International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality.

The incalculable value of wildlife

Billions of people, in developed and developing nations, benefit daily from the use of wild species for food, energy, materials, medicine, recreation, inspiration and many other vital contributions to human well-being.
The accelerating global biodiversity crisis, with a million species of plants and animals facing extinction, threatens these contributions to people.
World Wildlife Day (WWD) is an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and diversity of wildlife, let us also remember the threats they face from habitat loss, poaching, and climate change and also to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that their conservation provides to people.
At the same time, the Day reminds us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species, which have wide-ranging economic, environmental and social impacts.
Given these various negative effects, Sustainable Development Goal 15 focuses on halting biodiversity loss.

SIXTEEN MOUNTAIN GORILLA FACTS

1. They were once listed as critically endangered and are now just endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) list thanks to conservation efforts
2. The mountain gorilla can only survive in the wild and will not survive in captivity
3. Mountain gorillas share up to 98 per cent of their DNA with the human species
4. They stay in social groups of three to 40 individuals and are led by a dominant male known as the silverback
5. Like human finger prints, mountain gorillas have a unique identifier - the pattern on their nostrils
6. Mountain gorillas are omnivores and feed on tree barks, leaves, flowers, tree roots, snails and small ants - but never eat meat
7. The average mature silverback in a day can eat up to 18kg of vegetation
8. The gestation period of the mountain gorilla is nine months, just like the female human
9. A fully grown silverback is stronger than 20 adult humans combined and they can lift up to 1,810kg
10. The strength of gorillas is estimated to be 10 times their body weight making it four to ten times stronger than the average human
11. One average, male mountain gorillas weigh up to 180kg and are around 170cm tall
12. They communicate among themselves and have about 16 different types of calls or sounds
13. There are about 1000 left in the wild with half the population found in Uganda and the rest shared between Rwanda and the DR Congo
14. They don't usually drink water as they get the water they need through plants
15. They build a sleeping nest every evening and occasionally one for a midday nap
16. Mountain gorillas can live up to 53 years old
