AWESOME ANIMALS
TREE CLIMBING LIONS

Facts about tree climbing lions and why they climb.

Did you know ?

1 The lion is probably the most feared and respected of all African wild animals. This is because it is a super predator that is capable of hunting most of the Savannah wildlife for food.

2. Tree climbing lions are among the least understood of the big cats. They are like all the other lions in every respect, except for tree climbing. In the whole world, there are two 'populations' of tree climbing lions - only found in East Africa.

3. The two assumed reasons to explain why these lions have adapted to climbing trees are:
a). To avoid irritations by insects and bugs on the ground.
b). To escape the Savannah heat by basking on the branches where they can get some fresh breeze.

4. These tree climbing lions stay on the ground during the night and when it rains and both situations eliminate insects, bugs, and reduce heat. Basking in the trees helps them as well to keep watch over their grazing prey such as antelopes, buffaloes among others.

5. Their tree-climbing skills are regarded as a behavioural adaptation that they have mastered so well and are able to teach even their young cubs. This is why they do it with practice.

5. Tree climbing lions can be found in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park of Uganda and in Lake Manyara National Park of Tanzania both in East Africa.

6. Consequently, they are commonly referred to as the tree-climbing lions of East Africa. Lions in other parts of Africa such as Kluger National Park in South Africa, some parts of Kenya and in Kidepo Valley National Park have been occasionally, though very rarely seen climbing trees.

Back in the 16th century, the Omukama Olimi 1 of Bunyoro orchestrated a serries o cattle raids depopulating Buganda and Ankole, leading to a devastating famine. One day the sky fell dark during day light hours, prompting the Omukama to flee back to Bunyoro, leaving behind a large number of stollen cattle from which the Ankole people started breeding new new herds. It turns out the darkness turned out to be the solar eclipse of AD 1520. This striking hiltop monument, comprising a golden orb surppoted by three pillars representing the Kings Bunyoro, Ankole and Buganda commemorates this Mark in History.

Their beak is the reason they are called “Shoebill.”
Their long, shoe-shaped beak is used to eat small animals and fish in a single gulp. The end of the beak curves down and forms a hook. This sharp curve is used to pierce through the bodies of their prey to assist in digestion.
The beak of a shoebill can be 24 centimeters long and 20 centimeters wide. It can be more than a quarter the size of the rest of their bodies.

MOUNTAINEERING SAFARIS

Uganda is one of the best places in the world where visitors enjoy a rewarding and memorable hiking experience. Among the best mountains to hike include;

The Rwenzori Mountains:

This snow-capped mountain is one of the highest in Africa. Also commonly referred to as the ancient source of the world’s longest river the Nile River by the early explorers, a hike to this mountain is a really unique experience not to be missed while in the Pearl of Africa.

A hike through the different vegetation zones gets you closer to different animals and bird species including the rare three horned chameleon that will be encountered during the hike. The beautiful scenery is really worth it. Margherita, the highest peak of the Rwenzori Mountains at 5,109M above the sea level is snowcapped. Apart from the Margherita peak hike, there are other several available hiking options.

Best time of year for Rwenzori trekking

Basing on our past client’s feedbacks, January February and March are the best months to hike the Rwenzori Mountain., this is because during this month, the mountains are dry, making the whole experience easier. However, the experience can be booked and done at any time of the year.

Fitness and medical issues

Hiking the rwenzori mountains require that you are physically fit. We recommend that we consult with your personal doctors prior to your travel to the pearl of Africa. We also recommend that you get the basic vaccinations especially for Malaria. Our team on ground will always have the first Aid Kit, but we do also recommend that you come along with your special medications as recommended by the doctors.

*The Wonderful Wildlife of Uganda*

There are five different species of baboons in Africa that is the Chacma Baboon - inhabits southern Africa,

Guinea Baboon - inhabits western Africa,
Hamadryas Baboon - habitat is the Horn of Africa and Arabia, Olive Baboon - inhabits the savannas of North & Central Africa Yellow Baboon - lives in eastern and south-central Africa.

The Olive baboon is the only Specie found in Uganda. It can be identified by its heavily built body and a very terrestrial animal. Male olive baboons are slightly larger than females and frequently move between troops in search for social dominance.

They are Omnivorous and highly adaptable to any diet available & this is the reason they are wide spread all over Africa.
Gestation – 180 days and when a male baboon reaches 4 years old it will leave the troop, but a female will stay with the troop it was born into.

The main predators of Olive Baboons are lions, leopards, African wild dogs, hyenas, chimpanzees and crocodiles and the most dangerous, Humans.

How amazing would it be to go on a safari and encounter these funny mischief creatures?
Well! It’s possible during a safari in Uganda with Great lakes Safaris or even when you are staying at any of the Uganda lodges properties that is Primate Lodge Kibale and Budongo Eco Lodge.

Follow us for the next upcoming story about a baboon who was employed as a signalman on the railroads and never made one mistake and became a legend in his own right.
