1) Abel Tasman National Park - Sea kayaking in the national park is one of the most popular activities. Experience the tidal inlets, lagoons, golden beaches and rocky coastline while spotting marine life.

2) Queen Charlotte Sound - Kayak the waterways into bays and inlets, spot private beaches and lush bush. There’s a great variety of seabirds to spot and you’ll see seals and dolphins.

3) Milford Sound - Enjoy cruising through the sounds to see waterfalls, Mitre Peak and wildlife.

4) Akaroa - Along the coastline you’ll discover small sea caves, rock formations and wildlife such as the rare Hector dolphins, white-flippered penguins and native New Zealand birds.

5) Bay of Islands - with over 150 islands and 800 km of coastine, the Bay of Islands is the perfect kayaking location. There are white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and loads of marine life to spot.

We recommend two weeks minimum to explore New Zealand. Why’s that?

New Zealand is blessed with a diverse range of experiences and landscapes, rich culture and a multitude of activities and areas to explore. The North and South Islands are very different, as is the third largest island, Stewart Island. You need time to do any of these areas justice.

Over a two week vacation, you have time to see key spots only. Over three weeks, you can see more and have a better overall trip. Four weeks gives you a chance to see New Zealand in more detail. If you only have one week, we recommend you don’t go.

We’re happy to talk you through options for your New Zealand adventure. Our customized travel itineraries help make the most of your time in New Zealand and are designed around your travel dates, budget, activity preferences and travel group. It’s better to get advice and a great travel plan than to wing it and hope for the best.

Safety Tips for Driving in New Zealand’s Unique Landscapes

While driving in New Zealand’s picturesque landscapes is an incredible experience, it’s important to prioritize safety. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Take breaks: New Zealand’s roads can be winding and tiring, so take regular breaks to rest and stretch your legs. There are plenty of great cafes, picnic spots and scenic lookouts to enjoy a rest from driving.

2. Be cautious of animals: Keep an eye out for animals, particularly on rural roads. It’s not uncommon for animals such as sheep and dairy cows can be on the roads. For example they’re being moved by farmers from one paddock to another.

3. Stay alert in adverse weather conditions: New Zealand’s weather can change rapidly, so be prepared for rain, fog, or strong winds. Reduce your speed and adapt your driving to the conditions.

4. Respect the environment: New Zealand takes great pride in its natural beauty. Respect the environment by sticking to designated paths and disposing of waste properly. If there are no trash bins available take all your trash away with you and dispose of it later.

5. Know the one-lane bridge etiquette: New Zealand has many one-lane bridges. Familiarize yourself with the right of way rules and be patient when waiting for your turn to cross.

How long do you need for a trip to Australia? We recommend 2 weeks minimum. Why’s that?

Australia is big. Many people underestimate the physical size of Australia and this can play havoc with their trip. The distance between New York and Los Angeles (East Coast to West Coast) is equivalent to traveling between Sydney and Perth (East Coast to West Coast).

With 2 weeks, you have the time to visit multiple destinations in Australia and have the chance to for epic adventures in locations such as the Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, Kangaroo Island, and the Whitsunday Islands to name a few.

Of course you can go to Australia for less than 2 weeks, but you won’t have time to explore as much. We’re happy to talk you through options for your Aussie adventure. It’s better to get advice and a great travel plan than to wing it and hope for the best.

Tahiti or Bora Bora? Which one should you pick, if you have to pick one?

(1) Both islands have beautiful resorts to suit travelers looking for a family vacation or a honeymoon destination.

(2) Both islands are stunning, but we think Bora Bora is more so than Tahiti.

(2) You’ll find both islands have a range of activities to suit everyone in your travel group, but Tahiti has more on offer than quieter Bora Bora.

(3) Bora Bora is smaller, very romantic and more expensive than Tahiti. Tahiti has cheaper options for accommodation and more activity choices.

So ultimately it comes down to what kind of vacation you want. If you want romance, fewer people and don’t need cheaper accommodation options, we recommend you go to Bora Bora.

Are there wallabies in New Zealand?

Yes, there are! They were introduced in the late 1800s, mostly for hunting and display in private zoos. Some escaped though and have flourished in the wild, becoming a pest. With no natural predators, wallaby numbers have increased. The problem with that is they cause damage to crops and forestry plantations as well as compete with native animals for food and habitat. There is a government program to eliminate wallabies, but it’s an ongoing battle. The public has been asked to inform the authorities if they spot any sign of wallabies.

You might see some while you’re in New Zealand. If you do, be sure to report them. There is a dedicated NZ wallaby webpage for doing just that.

New Zealand entry requirements

To enter New Zealand, travelers must have both an NZeTA visa and a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). The NZeTA is required for citizens of all 60 visa waiver countries, including the USA, who are visiting for less than three months, as well as transit passengers and cruise ship passengers.

The NZeTA aims to enhance border security and streamline the border clearance process. You can obtain the NZeTA online or via a mobile app, and the processing may take up to 72 hours. The cost for the NZeTA is NZD $17 via the app or NZD $23 online, plus an additional International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) fee of NZD $35. Applicants need to provide personal and travel details, along with answering health and security questions.

The NZTD, which is free and takes about 10 minutes to complete, asks about travel history and items being brought into New Zealand. You need to complete the NZTD within 24 hours of starting the trip, and you can access it online or as a paper form if you can't access the online version.

Christchurch and how far it’s come since the 2011 earthquake.

Christchurch suffered a large earthquake in 2011, which resulted in 185 deaths, thousands of injuries, and widespread destruction of homes and historic buildings. Since that time, there has been a remarkable recovery that has seen the development of new cultural centers, hospitals, a convention center, playgrounds, shared spaces. The mix of old and new architectural styles gives Christchurch a modern feel and integrating laneways, street art, green spaces and community centered areas gives the city a Melbourne vibe on a smaller scale.

Some of our favorite places around Christchurch are Riverside Market for produce and restaurants, The Crossing, the Christchurch Botanical Gardens, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Tūranga (The Canterbury Public Library), and Margaret Mahy Playground

Enjoy walking around Christchurch and taking in all these changes that have been undertaken since the earthquake. Other recommendations for activities while you’re in Christchurch is to go up the gondola, and enjoy a soak in the He Puna Taimoana Hot Pools in New Brighton.

Tips for Renting a Car in New Zealand

Renting a car is a very convenient way to explore New Zealand at your own pace. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth experience:

1. Book in advance: To secure the best rates and ensure availability, it’s recommended to book your rental car in advance.

2. Choose the right vehicle: Consider the size of your group and the type of terrain you’ll encounter. A compact car is suitable for city driving, while larger vehicles are more comfortable for long journeys or off-road adventures.

3. Check the insurance coverage: Make sure you understand the insurance options offered by the rental company. Additional coverage for theft, damage, and liability is highly recommended. Don’t forget to get windscreen protection.

4. Inspect the car: Before driving off, thoroughly inspect the car for any existing damage and take photos or videos as evidence. Provide any damage to the rental company before driving off the rental lot.

5. Follow the fuel policy: Familiarize yourself with the fuel policy and return the car with the same amount of fuel it had when you picked it up. Check you know the right fuel to put in the car.

Remember to always drive responsibly and be aware of New Zealand’s strict drink-driving laws. In New Zealand, the alcohol limit for drivers aged 20 years and over is 250 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per litre of breath and the blood alcohol limit is 50 milligrams (mg) per 100 millilitres (ml) of blood. For those under 20 years of age, the limit is zero. If in doubt, always have a sober driver.

And ….. there are always police on the roads keeping on eye out on what’s happening, so don’t speed! You’ll likely get a ticket.

Is it easy to get to Australia from New Zealand?

Australia and New Zealand are somewhat close to each other, with the closest distance being 932 miles between them. Traveling between them is easy with well-connected air routes, and if you have longer, you can take a sea route.

Air travel is the most common and efficient means of getting between the two countries. There are many direct flights available between major cities in New Zealand (such as Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch) and major cities in Australia (such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth). Flight durations range from around 3 to 4 hours, depending on the specific route and destination. Some locations like Perth will be longer flight times with Auckland to Perth being over 7 hours.

New Zealand is one of the 10 happiest countries in the world. This is according to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, who ranked over 150 countries in 2023. What does this mean for you as a traveller?

You get to soak up the “happiness'‘ by osmosis when you’re there. It’s in the way people interact with you, how they go about their day to day activities, and cultural norms. You can’t help but notice it. Take note, enjoy it and make the most of it for the duration of your vacation. Notably, happier countries rank higher for safety and security. Peace of mind about that while you’re on vacation is a bonus.

When is the best time to visit Tahiti & Bora Bora, French Polynesia?

You can visit French Polynesia any time of the year, however the weather is at its driest and most comfortable during June/August. This can be the busiest time to visit, so consider months on either side.

During the rainy season November to April you can visit, but there will be tropical showers that come through more often than other times as it’s the rainy season. In between the rains are sunny periods, but the humidity is higher.
