As a 2024 VMCAS candidate, I wanted to broaden my experience in veterinary medicine, so I went on the May 2024 VIDA trip to Costa Rica. On this journey, we traveled to multiple communities to provide veterinary care for local dogs and cats. Word of the day - ZAGUATE 🐾

Did you know that ⁣in Costa Rica they use the word 'ZAGUATE' to refer to any street dog, stray dog or mutt?

The overpopulation of street dogs has been a known issue for generations, that's one of the main reasons we provide free spay/neuter clinics in the area, but another big solution will always be adoption, and today, this is your sign to do so!🌟

(These cuties were melting hearts at our vet clinic this summer, so we thought we'd share it with y'all and have zaguate's do what they do best, steal your hearts with their smiles! Adopt a new best friend!🐾🐶)

An Amazing Achievement! 🌟💙

Our beloved Dr. Ioanna Yglesias was one of only two people to achieve the highest score—a 99—on the prestigious exam to enter the medical specialties program of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS). Ioanna has been participating with Vida Volunteer since last year, and for those who don't know her, here she shares a little about herself:

"Hi! A bit about me: My mom is Greek, and my dad is Costa Rican, so I grew up strongly connected to both cultures. I studied medicine at UCR and graduated in 2023, after which I took some courses in the United States before returning to Costa Rica to start working with Vida Volunteer, my first opportunity to practice medicine while helping underserved communities, giving more to those who have less, and teaching volunteers in the process.

I started at Vida as a Doctor, and soon after, I began serving as Lead Doctor, a position that allowed me to practice teaching and organizing, two things I enjoy.

What stands out the most about me is that I love working with people from different cultures and going to remote areas where access to healthcare is minimal. That’s what attracted me to work with Vida, and it’s what inspires me to specialize in internal medicine and continue giving more to those who have less. I hope to participate with Vida again in the future!"

Did you know that the work of weavers has been essential for the survival of the Mayan ancient culture? 🇬🇹🌟 Myth has it that the goddess Ixchel taught the first woman how to weave at the beginning of time. ⁣ ⁣ Since then, Mayan mothers have taught their daughters, from generation to generation. For five centuries, Mayan women have transmitted the Mayan vision of the world through weaving designs. Weaving continues to keep these women connected to their ancestors and within the sacred and cultural Mayan universe. ⁣ ⁣ Cultural immersion is an important aspect of our Service-Learning trips. What cases did you see at your Vida Clinic? #casediscussion In our clinics, our volunteers gain experience with diverse cases, especially those specific to areas that we work in. Our @uwlvidavolunteer students got to discuss with local doctors and their peers the interesting cases they've witnessed and assisted. Some cases that our volunteers commonly see: 📍Rotavirus: this severe diarrheal disease effects children world wide, but is most commonly found in Central America and African communities. 📍Gastritis: A very common diet in these communities is to eat a lot of fatty and spicy food, which can lead to the development of Gastritis. 📍Malnutrition: Unfortunately, Guatemala has the 6th highest rate of malnutrition in the world. Do I need prior experience to join the Veterinary Program?⁣⁣⁣🐶🐾🩺💫 ⁣⁣⁣⁣•⁣ All you need is the right attitude and a passion for helping animals ❤️ ⁣ ⁣⁣•⁣ Since this is a supervised Service-Learning Program, we provide training, study manuals, orientation, and supplies so no prior experience is required. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣•⁣ Our Vet #volunteerabroad program is actually designed for students from all levels who are looking to gain an in-depth, hands-on learning experience in the field of veterinary medicine. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣•⁣ Past students have ranged from pre-vet students with limited surgical exposure to upper-level veterinary students.⁣⁣ All students work with a skilled team of local veterinarians and technicians who closely supervise our clinics to provide quality care and educational services. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣•⁣ In addition, we operate our field clinics in accordance with the International Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Field Services Guidelines. Our story began in 2008 when Vida Volunteer was founded to be a resource students could depend on to support their cause of helping fellow human beings and animals.

We have learned a lot and we have evolved from those early days but our program still embodies that original “Vida” spirit.

We are still aiming to bring people together through Service-Learning experiences that emphasize on cultural integration and opening of the mind and heart to global human and animal healthcare issues. Over the years, we have welcomed over 10.000 students and thanks to their support and hard work, we have been able to assist more than 200.000 patients and over 100.000 animals since 2008.
