The Maine Lobsterman. Portland, Maine. 1939.

Elroy "Snoody" Johnson of Bailey Island, the model for the statue, visits his plaster likeness in 1939.

The statue was originally created by sculptor Victor Kahill and exhibited at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, in Flushing.

Four versions exist. The plaster original (seen here); the Temple Street statue in downtown Portland; the statue at Lands end on Bailey Island, and one on Maine Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Good morning from Maine!!

Just caught this for the first time on YouTube this morning!

Loved seeing so many beloved Island friends and family. You all are rockstars in my eyes! Such good hearted hard working people.

They say home is where the heart is and no matter where I go or live my heart is surely at home here.

We wish them well and are so excited to see what the market will bring.

We wish them well and are so excited to see what the market will bring.

The new owners of the former Vegetable Corner site at Harpswell Neck and Mountain roads say they plan to open a seasonal market, bakery and cafe called Corner Market with the eventual goal of making it a year-round business.

The bridge that brings you to the Captain Lawrence E Johnson House on Bailey Island!

There's a ton of interesting architecture and history here, but this unique bridge in Maine stands out as extra-special.

12/05/2021

This bridge is the only cribstone bridge in the world and it is located in Harpswell, Maine connecting Orr's Island to Bailey's Island.

If you have never been here, is this something worth seeing the next time you visit in Maine?

From our Island family to the Hutchins Family.

“It is with deepest sorrow and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our kindhearted, generous leader, Howard Hutchins.

Land's End Gift Shop was the pride and joy of Howard's life and he was devoted to making it a special place for generations of visitors.

Things will never be the same without him, but we'll do our very best to continue his legacy.

To honor Howard's life - be kind to one another, be free with a smile and make sure to enjoy the beauty of the island.”

Hello Harpswell Friends, this post might be a little bit long but it is definitely shareable and needed. Please take a good look at this guy in the photo. He was the most generous and stubborn man.
In his early days he always made sure that his friends were taken care of. He would buy meals for people, he would make sure his friends had heat by paying for their fuel anonymously.
In his later years came the stubbornness. He ran his foot over with the lawnmower so he was out of work for a bit, then he had a hole in his intestine and then he found out he had cancer. He would refuse any help because he didn’t deserve it, he didn’t want to take from someone who “needed” it.
Let me tell you something friends! We live in such a wonderful place that we all want to help each other. There are so many resources out there for just Harpswell residents. The good news that each organization is completely anonymous and there are no questions asked. Reach out and enjoy everyone’s hard work.
If you are in need of heating assistance you can call Linda at the town office. You can reach out to the Harpswell Santa Fund for help with gifts, heating assistance or help with food. Seniors, you can also reach out to Harpswell Aging at Home for meals in a pinch. How amazing it would be to be treated to a meal you don’t have to cook. Believe me you deserve it! How many times have you donated your spare change?
