Lets all see what we can do on this issue in the City of Sumpter, Oregon!

We suggested to the city council months ago to approach ODOT to lower the speed limit past Whistle Stop RV Park / Sawmill Gulch Rd down to 45MPH to the southern city limits so those riders with accommodations on Iron Horse loop, Sumpter rv Park and the folks that live in Moutain View Estates can legally ride into town (along with 2 of the city councilors...) Rebecca & I researched the heck out of it while we worked with ODOT & Oregon State Parks to get Mill Street (the main drag in town) legalized to ride on in 2020.

So please help us out in this endeavor by sending in a email supporting this effort to ride legally and access more of our town!

send an email to [email protected]

it can be as short as;

"Please legalize Hwy 410 from Sawmill Gulch to the southern city limits of Sumpter, making it safer to ride ATV's"

we did GREAT on the USFS letters this spring so please help us & you in this endeavor!!

Thank you,
Jon & Rebecca

We wish we were making this up as a late April Fools joke, but it is no joke.

Everything that is orange on this map the forest service believes "may" have wilderness characteristics. We realize the map in this picture does not give enough specificity to know exactly where you're at, but the sure amount of orange should let you know, they are looking at possibly tying up a lot of land in wilderness or backcountry non-motorized. That's not to mention the wholesale closure of the Wallowa-Whitman and Malheur National Forests to cross country travel via Travel Management, restricting motorized access to less than 10% of the land base, grazing allotments will be impacted, mining will be impacted, private property will be impacted, recreation will be impacted, big game hunting will be impacted, firewood cutting will be impacted, and on, and on.

This link will take you to the map so you can magnify and see a clearer version of what the forest service is saying "may" have wilderness characteristics - chrome-extensio://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1169718.pdf

03/27/24 Central Cascades Zone Bottom Line:

Avalanche danger will increase on Wednesday as the mountains pick up more snow. Triggering avalanches in new wind drifted snow will be likely near treeline and above treeline and anywhere wind blown snow is accumulating. Look for signs of unstable snow such as cracking and recent avalanches as indicators that avalanches can happen and when in doubt about snow stability stick to slopes less than 30 degrees steep.

📸 from COAC forecaster : Skier triggered slab avalanche on a wind loaded convex roll on Tuesday, March 26. NNE facing slope near treeline in the Santiam Pass area. The crown was 15 - 20 cm (6 - 8”). Size D1 (small).
