“Cass Arkansas After a Rain” by Olin Travis, late 1920s, oil on canvas, private collection

Dallas artist Olin Travis made his first trip to Arkansas in 1913, spending four months sketching in the Ozark Mountains. Three years later he married Kathryne Bess Hail (1894–1972), an Ozark native who was a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After spending a decade in Chicago, the couple relocated to Dallas, where they helped to establish the Dallas Art Institute. The institute set a new standard in the South, being the first program in the region to offer art instruction in multiple fields. Travis taught and directed the school until 1941, four years before its doors would close.

Travis made trips to Arkansas nearly every summer between 1914 and 1935 and maintained a home there.

Mary Nell Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953, in Newport, Arkansas, USA. Her father Maurice Steenburgen was a freight-train conductor who worked at the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Her mother Nellie Mae was a school-board secretary.
After her graduation, Mary joined ‘Hendrix College’ to study drama. During her time at ‘Hendrix College,’ one of her teachers suggested that she audition at New York City's ‘Neighborhood Playhouse.’

Rain, rain, go away. Here's a vintage undated photo that shows Beaver resident Purl Fuss Boillot (1906-1987) paddling his boat by The Narrows railroad bridge cut at Beaver. Purl owned and operated the Beaver General Store and filling station. Flooding of the White River is fairly common during heavy rain seasons, but it's a rarity to see it captured from this perspective! (ESHM Collections PH-38E)
