Corporate Runaways

Corporate Runaways We're passionate about overland travel - preferably by motorcycle - and want to share our experiences and lessons with like-minded or curious folks!

Founded in 2010, the Corporate Runaways strive for a life without cubes, alarm clocks, or deadlines. Where days are spent on motorcycles discovering as many beautiful things as possible before setting up camp.

Our initial venture in 2010-2011 was an overland trip from Boston, Massachusetts through North America, Central America and South America to Ushuaia, Tierra Del Fuego - the bottom of the world. In 2012, we did a trip from Boston to Colorado and back via Canada with our two dogs on a Ural motorcycle with a sidecar. The dogs loved it, and we loved it, so we're currently planning for a RTW with the dogs on the Ural.

We Bought An Ambulance – Corporate Runaways

We Bought An Ambulance. A number of our friends have been "wtf?! why _an ambulance_?!"

Here's why: http://www.corporaterunaways.com/2018/09/21/we-bought-an-ambulance/

Company Vehicles We Bought An Ambulance Posted on September 21, 2018 by Kay For those keeping track, this is our 4th attempt at adventure vehicle. Many people wonder why, out of all the myriad vehicle choices, we’d choose an ambulance. This post will attempt to explain why an ambulance may be one ...

Long time no update, but we are in the midst of a cross country trip with the dogs and are blogging it. Check it out on our site: http://corporaterunaways.com or follow our tweets at

Dickinson, ND to Butte, MT (Dachary here) One nice thing about still being on East Coast time: when the little dog wakes you up for a walk at 5:30am, it FEELS like 7:30, so you can walk her, have breakfast and be on the road by 7am… which feels like 9. The best of all […]

Day 16 – Bar Harbour, Maine to Home | Corporate Runaways

Aaaand here's Day 16 - our last day on the Nova Scotia trip, wherein we make it home!

Dark Skies likes it when we’re inside the US borders, and rewarded us with a precise window, telling us when the rain would stop, and how long we had to pack everything before it started again. We followed its lead, pilled and fed the dogs, and packed up whilst the current bout petered out. Then wen...

Day 14 – Antigonish, NS to Moncton, NB | Corporate Runaways

Finally got around to writing a few more days from the end of the Nova Scotia trip... here's Day 14:

Not being able to get the window closed last night led to a surprisingly chilly night. Kay and I hunkered down in the bed, under the blanket and comforter, under the down sleeping bag, and under a pile of dog. It’s a testament to the cold that the dogs stayed piled on the bed with us. My dog, Ben, g...

Day 3 – Saint John, New Brunswick to Amherst, Nova Scotia | Corporate Runaways

Day 3 is up! Lots of photos in this one!

Made some pit stops at the ATM and Wall Mart for drugs (NyQuil and Tylenol with Codine! :D ), and got the first drips of the day whilst waiting in the parking lot. So, we dug out the rain gloves, and Dachary grabbed her FroggTogg rain pants, just in case some real rain set in, which it did just a fe...

The Charging of Devices has begun! It’s amazing how much electronic junk we bring on our trips… T-Minus 36 hours, give or take!

08/21/2013

Went through the spots on our Google Map for the NS trip last night. A surprising number of them are related to chocolate and wine. Hmm…

08/16/2013

Just a week to go before we leave for Nova Scotia! Alas, our tires for the Ural didn't come this week, so it'll be an after work project next week. Bummer.

Every trip begins with… shopping! | Corporate Runaways

Time for a little shopping, anyone?

Now let’s just get one thing straight: we’re not new at this. In fact, you’d think after the Americas trip, and last year’s Colorado trip with the dogs, we’d have everything we need – wouldn’t you?

The Value of Technical Clothes for Motorcycle Travel | Ain't No Pillion

Dachary's been doing some shopping, so here are some thoughts about travel clothes for motorcycle trips!

We’ve been slowly refining our kit and gear for extended motorcycle travel, and one thing we haven’t given a lot of official attention to in our blogs is the value of technical clothing for motorcycle travel and moto camping.

Progressive International Motorcycle Show – New York City | Ain't No Pillion

D just posted a writeup of our trip over the weekend to Progressive International Motorcycle Show! We tried out a few fun new bikes, and got to meet Lois Pryce! Excellent MC show!

Over the weekend, the Corporate Runaways took a bus to NYC for the Progressive International Motorcycle Show. I won tickets courtesy of on Twitter, and Kay has gone 3 or 4 times now and this was to be my second trip. Last year, we went on a chartered bus with the Yankee Beemers. It was unf...

Winter Riding in Really Cold Temps + Snow! | Ain't No Pillion

D just posted a (lengthy) writeup to her blog about winter weather riding. Do you have any good winter motorcycle riding tips?

We’ve always ridden in winter – as long as the roads are clear of ice and snow. So we’re not new to riding in low temps. We never winterize our bikes, beyond topping up the gas, throwing some seafoam into the tank, and checking the battery periodically – because we always intend to ride. But since a...

Pondering titles for our next big trip. Kay's leading idea: Corporate Runaways: Slower. Longer. Harder.

01/03/2013

It's 12° out, feels like -5 with the base wind-chill, and we just got in from a ride. Amusingly (and unsurprisingly) the Ural loves the cold temps, and flies right over ice and snow. Great winter vehicle! We just need to tweak our gear a bit. Blog forthcoming!

Why wearing jeans on a motorcycle is a really bad idea

Yikes! This right here, folks, is why we're ATGATT (Sadly, he doesn't appear to have learned his lesson!)

Beware some pics are very graphic….this is my warning. Safety is something we take seriously and I truly appreciate the humility of this article and the pics to prove that wearing no protect...

Christmas for Motorcyclists! | Ain't No Pillion

Motorcycle Christmas b***y! Woot!

I took the opportunity to get my SO a new pair of motorcycle gloves. I have a pair of Rev’It! Zenith H2O gloves that the SO has been drooling over/bumming periodically for the last few years. We have the same glove size and so we can easily swap gloves, which makes it kind of nice when one of us get...

Bajaj RE GDI (Tuk Tuk): The Jalopnik Classic Review

We love the tuk-tuk - it's on the list of vehicles we'd like to use for our adventures. Diane sent this little gem our way - if you've ever wondered what it's like to drive one of these crazy things, here it is!

In this era of rising gas prices and tightening emissions standards, owning a car can be tough. On the other hand, turning in your keys to become a full on motorcycle rider is tricky when you have gym bags and children and other crap to cart around.

On Acquiring a Ural | Ain't No Pillion

Just posted an article about how we came to acquire the Ural. If you're curious about the reasoning behind our crazy, this is it!

So you may have guessed from the picture I posted in my last entry that we bought a Ural over the summer! When we went on our Americas trip, it was great, except for one thing… when we came home, the dogs had been “broken” by the dog-sitters. We believe that Kay’s dog had been abused, and he was no ...

Corporate Runaways | Boston to Colorado

Kay finally got around to putting together a trip page from our Boston to Colorado trip we took with the dogs on the Ural!

On July 19th we grabbed the Ural, and Dachary’s BMW, threw the dogs in the sidecar, and set off across America during one of the hottest summers on record. It was a mad dash to get to Colorado, and back (via Canada) before the last of Kay’s vacation days.

Review: Camp Stoves for Motorcycle Camping | Ain't No Pillion

Check out the review of motorcycle camping stoves from Dachary's blog.

Not everyone who camps on a motorcycle does cooking in camp, but we really enjoy having the option. When we went on our Americas trip, we had intended to cook while camping a LOT more often than we actually ended up doing (cooking *or* camping, for that matter). But we do still cook when we camp sin...

Review: Sleeping Pads for Motorcycle Camping | Ain't No Pillion

New review up on Dachary's motorcycle blog: Sleeping Pads for Motorcycle Camping. (Find out how that Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite pad did, and what we've replaced it with ;)

When you’re traveling by motorcycle, a good night’s sleep is surprisingly important. You need to be rested so you can be alert and in top-form when you’re riding a motorcycle all day long. And good sleep also lets your body recover from all the aches and pains of a hard day of riding. So if you’re c...

We’ve Created a Monster! | Corporate Runaways

We've been having fun acclimating the dogs to riding in the Ural, and wearing Doggles.

Over the past week, we’ve been gradually taking the dogs on progressively longer rides in the Ural to help them get used to it. They’re both taking to it: they now get all excited when I bring out the harnesses, and both dogs happily hop into the sidecar under their own steam. No more need to lift B...

Acquiring our Russian Bride… er Bike | Corporate Runaways

Wrote up our visit to Ural NE yesterday, including our "training" - those bikes handle SO MUCH BETTER than the crappy Honda Nighthawk 250s in sidecar class!

Today we drove out to Ural of New England to turn over our cashier’s check for the bike (yikes! Neither of us has ever paid cash for something that expensive before!) and fill out the paperwork. We had a last minute snafu as we were gearing up and doing our normal pre-ride check before getting out o...

Monday Q&A: How Much Does a Big Motorcycle Adventure Trip Cost? | Ain't No Pillion

This week's Monday Q&A on Dachary's motorcycle blog looking at the costs for big overland motorcycle trips:

One of the most common questions that people ask anyone who’s done any big overland travel is: “How did you pay for it?” Many people seem to have a perception that a big long-distance motorcycle trip is something that costs a ton of money, or it’s something they dream of doing but never think they’l...

Sidecar Class! | Corporate Runaways

Sidecar class was utterly insane and a total blast!

Yesterday was S/TEP – Sidecar/Trike Education Program – through Ironstone Ventures, a local motorcycle education school here in Massachusetts. I took my MSF class through them in 2010, so I was delighted to find they had a sidecar class, too! After some minor snafu where the website said to show up ...

Review: HelmetLok Locking Carabiner | Ain't No Pillion

Today's review on Dachary's motorcycle blog: HelmetLok! Super awesome locking carabiner!

Today I’m going to review one of my favorite little bits of motorcycle awesomosity: the HelmetLok. This is literally just a locking carabiner, but it’s brilliant. It’s easy to carry and easy to use, and provides a great alternative to the fiddly little bracket-style helmet locks that – let’s face it...
