Dog Handler wanted in Eagle Village, Alaska for our small kennel with 20 dogs. Eagle is on the upper Yukon River near the Canadian border, surrounded by mountains. The winters are cold and dark, but the northern lights are epic and the mushing is good! Our dogs are all friendly, happy, hard workers with good dispositions.
Qualifications: Must love dogs, adventurous, healthy, strong, active, hard working, positive attitude, important to be adaptable to changing situations as things don’t always go as planned in rural Alaska or with sled dogs or mushing in general. Open minded, willing to learn, and easy going are important, but also able to hustle when hustle is required. Prior experience with the sled dogs is a plus but not necessary.
Duties: Assisting kennel owners in all aspects of dog care including but not limited to helping with feedings in all kinds of conditions, scooping p**p, daily chores, mushing dogs, dog training/conditioning, breaking trail and trail maintenance, snowmachine driving, gear care and repair, and other daily chores around the kennel to keep things moving such as cutting firewood with us, etc. There will be the possibility of helping with subsistence activities such as hunting and gathering, and learning of our culture in bush Alaska from our Alaska Native family. High probability that plenty of work time will be spent puppy cuddling, puppy walks, bike rides, & assisting with socialization, puppy training. There will be a lot of opportunities to mush dogs in the wild and rugged Upper Yukon country of the Han Gwich’in people.
Provided: Food and handler cabin with power, internet and outhouse. Having your own vehicle is a plus, however snowmachines, four wheeler, bikes and our vehicles are available for use.
