Shout out to our kennel junior musher, Aliza Lee Murphy. Aliza, age 7, from the Han and Koyukon tribes is super enthusiastic, a quick learner, hard worker and has a love for sled dogs. We were so impressed that she was unharnessing dogs and putting them away herself after a couple of days, learning just by watching intently at what we were doing. Mahsi choo to Aliza for all her help around our kennel and always being so cheerful! Looking forward to seeing ok the dog sled runners this coming winter!

We aren’t at Kobuk 440 today sadly, because two of my main leaders are not yet healed from shoulder injuries sustained in a previous race, along with unseasonably very warm weather (60 degrees most days) I haven’t been able to keep up the training as I have wanted to. Lacking my two main lead dogs has been a tough one. With a fishing ban on the Yukon River salmon which is a good source for both us and our dogs team, we are trying to keep our kennel small in numbers however that poses issues as we don’t have many dogs to replace our race team when one is injured. Mushing season is pretty much over here in Eagle, so free fun dog walks it is. At least we can enjoy that with our “kids.” We are looking forward to next race season and hopefully finish all required qualifiers for Iditarod 2026 and gain valuable experience in the process. Happy Spring everyone! Best of luck and safety to everyone racing the Kobuk 440 today!

Dog Handler wanted in Eagle Village, Alaska for our small kennel with 20 dogs. Eagle is on the upper Yukon River near the Canadian border, surrounded by mountains. The winters are cold and dark, but the northern lights are epic and the mushing is good! Our dogs are all friendly, happy, hard workers with good dispositions.
Qualifications: Must love dogs, adventurous, healthy, strong, active, hard working, positive attitude, important to be adaptable to changing situations as things don’t always go as planned in rural Alaska or with sled dogs or mushing in general. Open minded, willing to learn, and easy going are important, but also able to hustle when hustle is required. Prior experience with the sled dogs is a plus but not necessary.
Duties: Assisting kennel owners in all aspects of dog care including but not limited to helping with feedings in all kinds of conditions, scooping p**p, daily chores, mushing dogs, dog training/conditioning, breaking trail and trail maintenance, snowmachine driving, gear care and repair, and other daily chores around the kennel to keep things moving such as cutting firewood with us, etc. There will be the possibility of helping with subsistence activities such as hunting and gathering, and learning of our culture in bush Alaska from our Alaska Native family. High probability that plenty of work time will be spent puppy cuddling, puppy walks, bike rides, & assisting with socialization, puppy training. There will be a lot of opportunities to mush dogs in the wild and rugged Upper Yukon country of the Han Gwich’in people.
Provided: Food and handler cabin with power, internet and outhouse. Having your own vehicle is a plus, however snowmachines, four wheeler, bikes and our vehicles are available for use.
Not ideal: Heavy drinking, drug use are not allowed. G***a ok as long as it doesn’t interfere with duties. Whiners and racists need not apply. Serious inquiries only. APPLY BY emailing interest and applicable resume: [email protected]

We made the decision not to race in the Tdog 200 starting today due to concerns about the warm weather and dogs overheating. We couldn't make it into Fairbanks for the race (mushing up Polly Summit 3,600 feet in 30-50 degree temps we are dealing with in Eagle.) We are bummed to miss the race, it looks like the Tdog races (50, 110 yesterday and the 200 today) were and will be a lot of fun. Best of luck, health and safety to everyone running today and tomorrow! We'll be home doing short early morning runs with our puppy teams, our kennel future!

So I have this little quote in my house that says, "A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor." Its the same in mushing, smooth trails never made a skillful musher. Same in life. Thankful for challenges and more thankful to overcome them! Keep calm and carry on! My thought for the day.

Today at noon my team and I depart in the Two Rivers 200, (an Iditarod qualifier) as bib #16 from Chatanika Lodge. We were planning on mushing back to Eagle after the Yukon Quest but decided to stay for the TR 200 race this weekend. You can follow at www.trdma.info race trackers will be found on their website.
Excited for this race and hoping for a successful finish. Mahsi’choo to my amazing, supportive family: especially my parents keeping our house warm and watching over my puppies, and my patient and kind husband/dog handler! A special shout out to our fav: Moose Soup Lady aka Jennie McLean for graciously hosting us in Fairbanks this whole time! There are so many people to thank, friends and supporters, race volunteers, vets, trail breakers…. So many people.
This photo was taken by this past weekend down in Denali where we took the team to train. We met up with friends and had an epic, fun, adventurous weekend! Mahsi to Emily and Sam for inviting to train from your cabin in Cantwell! So much fun!
We depart tomorrow at noon from Chatanika Lodge! Come on out!
