Tomorrow at 4pm Orcas Island will celebrate a new winter tradition: the inaugural “Be the Light” Winter Solstice Luminary parade!

On the longest night of the year, come together with your island neighbors in celebration of community, resilience, and joy as we usher in the colder, darker months.

The parade is for ALL islanders of all ages. Bring a luminaria to carry in the parade or just come and be a part of the procession.

The parade begins at the Orcas Island Community Foundation parking lot at 33 Urner Street and will follow along Main Street, down North Beach Road and back to OICF with lanterns and luminaries of all shapes lighting our collective path towards the warmer, brighter days ahead. The Odd Fellows’ drum line will be featured!

The parade will conclude with an all-community gathering with a bonfire, music and warm beverages.

Businesses in Eastsound will be open and at the conclusion of the parade participants and visitors are encouraged to shop local in support of our friends and neighbors.

If you’ve been paying attention these past few months, you may have noticed an abruptly changing landscape amour our island’s small businesses - fewer and unpredictable hours, staffing shortages, extended and early seasonal breaks, and closures. A few weeks ago the island came together in support of local businesses as part of Small Business Saturday, but one-day promotions do not sustain a business operating on razor-thin margins while weathering the effects of ferry disruptions, supply chain issues, and increasing costs of operation. So what to do?

Be a local by spending locally, keeping money on island building and supporting our community. As we noted before, 68 cents of every dollar spent locally stays in the local economy. That means it will make its way back to you!

With holidays just around the corner, many of us are preparing for family gatherings and being reunited with loved ones. As we plan for those celebrations over the next few weeks, let's do what we can to keep Orcas strong and support our friends and neighbors. Local shops and restaurants are busy getting ready for islanders to grace their doorways!

For the latest info on hours of operation, the newest merchandise and menu items, special events, and discounts, check out our web page dedicated to the retailers, restaurants, and bars that help make Orcas so special. We'll update the page in advance of each weekend until Christmas and as info comes in, so check back for the latest!
