For over 30 years, Arctic Treks has made it possible for small groups of adventurous souls to experience one of the most remote, magnificent wilderness areas on our planet.

We wanted to share the news of a different kind of journey we've been on this summer, after Carol was diagnosed with plasma cell leukemia in late May. While Carol has been in Ann Arbor MI getting treatment, Jim and our wonderful guides have kept our Arctic Treks trips going smoothly and successfully. This other, new cancer journey is still in progress, with many more unknowns and uncertainties, but we've been so grateful for all the love and support we've been receiving, and for the reservoir of healing Arctic energy we've been calling on as well.

In late May, Carol was unexpectedly diagnosed with plasma cell leukemia, an aggressive form of multiple myeloma. Our first focus was getting Carol immediately to a top treatment center at the University of Michigan Cancer Center in Ann Arbor MI, where her twin sister and brother-in-law live. After.....

Revived plans to drill for oil at the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd are prompting outcries from Indigenous people with ancient ties to the herd.

This is when Fairbanksans officially consider it spring--when the birds come back! Right now at Creamer's Field there are hundreds of geese, ducks and swans--and the first sandhill crane just arrived today!

A powerful, important message from our dear friend Tom Campion about the ongoing work needed to protect the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge.

http://act.alaskawild.org/sign/Senate_refuge2016/

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge will not survive without the engagement of everyday citizens. The threat to the refuge by politicians who want to allow drilling for oil has never been more urgent.

Some good information here about what this decision means.

We are so grateful to President Obama for taking this action to protect the Arctic Ocean!

BREAKING NEWS!

Thank you President Obama for listening to the call of coastal communities, scientists, and the large majority of Americans who recognize that offshore drilling is too risky and too dirty to allow. Today’s decision to permanently protect 115 million acres in the Arctic Ocean solidifies your climate legacy with 125 million acres protected in the Arctic. It also moves America one step closer to a clean energy future.

Early August basecamp with Arctic Treks on the North Slope. It was green when we arrived and it snowed the 2nd day. Fall colors became more and more evident every day.

"August Snow" is hanging for the first time in public at the Sanford - Springvale Art Association gallery. This 12" x 40" print is mounted and sealed (including UV protection) to a 3/8" MDF board. The scene is the Oolah Valley in Gates of the Arctic National Park. If you want to see a scene like this for yourself just sign up with Arctic Treks for one of their trips. Or stop by the gallery and take this one home with you!

from Carol's Sept 10 facebook post -- "These two weeks or so when hundreds to thousands of sandhill cranes gather in the UAF and Creamers Refuge fields are always magical to me. Today as I walked the trails at Creamers, the air was empty and quiet, with just a lone pair of cranes in the tall grass talking softly to each other. It made me think of the lone caribou we see up north after the herd has moved on, if they'll have to make their way south by themselves, or be able to find others of their kind to journey with."

Hearts & Bones: A Sierra Magazine Digital Exclusive by Rick Bass

such beautiful, moving writing by Rick Bass about a trip he did with us to the Arctic Refuge and village of Kaktovik

“What we do in this world matters; what can we leave behind that is beautiful?” Those are among the opening words in "Hearts & Bones," a lyric essay by nature writer Rick Bass published here as a Sierra digital exclusive. The line is classic Bass—communicating a sensitivity to the world as it is, an...

Hundreds from the Gwich'in Nation were joined by international supporters last week at the annual Gwich’in Gathering in Arctic Village, Alaska, and together they formed the shape of a caribou with the message “Protect Forever” – calling for the permanent protection of the USFWS Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Tell President Obama you too support the strongest possible protections for the Arctic Refuge and its Coastal Plain: http://act.alaskawild.org/sign/obama_Iheartrefuge

We've done trips with a number of outdoor industry leaders from many of these wonderful, environmentally and socially conscious companies--and we want to give all of them a huge thank you for supporting the campaign--and we encourage all of you outdoor, wilderness enthusiasts to support these great companies!

We’re back from this year’s Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City, Utah, and a big THANK YOU to The Conservation Alliance and these member businesses: KEEN, Patagonia, Merrell, The North Face and Clif Bar for all their help building support to protect the USFWS Arctic National Wildlife Refuge! These companies and several others scattered throughout this industry trade show featured postcards at their booths - 1,000s of postcards to President Obama were collected, We Are The Arctic books were given away, and Sutra the Polar Bear took by storm. Together we’ll get the Arctic Refuge protected once and for all!

A big thanks to these amazing Refuge supporters as well! AVEX, Black Diamond, Chacos, Eagle Creek, GU Energy Labs, Hilleberg the Tentmaker, Kelty, La Sportiva, Mountaineers Books, Osprey Packs, Petzl, Prism Kite Technology, Sea to Summit - Outdoor Gear, Sierra Designs, Smartwool, Superfeet Worldwide, The Mountain Lab, Therm-a-Rest, Timberland, Toad&Co and Yakima Racks!

This trip that we led was so fortunate to end up in the midst of thousands of caribou on the coastal plain of the Arctic Natl. Wildlife Refuge--and we were so happy that AWL Exec. Dir. Cindy Sh**un was there to experience that--she has done so much to help protect the Arctic Refuge, and we're so grateful to her and all the AWL staff!

Our Executive Director, Cindy Shogan, just returned from a trip to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that included the amazing Philippe Cousteau and Ashlan Gorse Cousteau.

Seeing firsthand the beauty of a place still untouched by humankind, and working side by side with the Gwich’in people to whom the Arctic Refuge and its Coastal Plain are sacred, these are the reasons why it holds a special place in our hearts. The League’s goal has always been to obtain the strongest possible protection for the Arctic Refuge and its biological heart, the Coastal Plain. And it always will be.
