The early bird catches the...turtle! 🐢☀️

Female sea turtles come to the shore to nest during the night and/or morning, which is why beach ramps close from 9pm to 7am (or 6am for priority ramps). This allows for the females to lay their nests undisturbed and unharmed and gives time for our Resource Management team to protect the nests.

Female loggerheads (the most common on the Seashore) start laying eggs once they reach about 20 years old and can lay 3-4 nests per season. Nests can average anywhere from 80-120 eggs and incubate approximately 60 days until they hatch.

SHARKS FROM ABOVE: Logan Abed sent us this photo of a shark off the coast of Corolla. He was flying his drone when he captured the image on May 29th.

Though attacks are extremely rare, anyone entering the water should remember you're going into their territory and respect them. It should come as no surprise there are sharks in the ocean...

World Oceans Day is a day to celebrate the ocean’s beauty, appreciate its importance to humanity, and act to conserve marine ecosystems.

As the world’s first National Seashore, Cape Hatteras established a blueprint for conserving coastal ecosystems and historic sites. This paved the way for the creation of nine more National Seashores and four National Lakes. (One of which became Indiana Dunes National Park).

Another major milestone in marine conservation was made about 16 miles off of Cape Hatteras. On January 30, 1975, Congress designated Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to protect the wreck of the U.S.S. Monitor and the abundance of marine life which live around it.

Monitor National Marine Sanctuary was America’s first National Marine Sanctuary, paving the way for the creation of fourteen more National Marine Sanctuaries and three Marine National Monuments. America’s National Marine Sanctuaries are now used as a blueprint for marine protected areas around the world.

What do you do to help care for the ocean?

Sad news....
☮️♥️

Late this afternoon we made the sad but necessary decision to humanely euthanize the herd’s newest foal, a filly born Sunday morning named Elsa.

On Sunday when Elsa was first seen, besides being on the small side she seemed to be in decent health. She was observed nursing and was seen multiple times yesterday as well. However, this morning when one of our staff came across Elsa’s mother and two-year-old sister, she was not with them. After a quick search the foal was located out on the beach with a different harem about a half mile away. She was with a mare who was being very protective and even letting her try to nurse, but obviously Elsa was not getting any nourishment and could not be left with her.

After touching base with our vet, we decided to try and grab Elsa and take her back over to her mother to see if they could be successfully reunited. We were able to catch her and get her into the truck, but once we had our hands on her we could tell she was in very bad shape. After another conversation with the vet, and also after learning that her mother had been seen kicking at her on Sunday, we decided to forego trying to reunite them and brought Elsa directly to the farm so she could be seen by the vet.

Blood tests revealed that Elsa did not receive any colostrum, so either her mother was not producing it or Elsa was not successfully nursing. She also had pneumonia, was severely dehydrated, and while we don't think she was truly premature she was definitely dysmature. She was very sick. It became clear why Elsa’s mother had rejected her - she most likely sensed that Elsa was not going to survive.

Elsa was already fading quickly by that point so we made the decision to help her pass quietly and with no further suffering. She has been buried at the farm next to the other foals we’ve lost over the years. They are just outside the mares’ pasture so they always have a big herd of their “aunts” watching over them.

We’d like to thank our staff and volunteers who helped get Elsa to safety today. It’s difficult any time there’s a medical emergency with one of the horses, but going through this kind of thing with a foal is exceedingly hard. Our staff and volunteers always rise to the occasion and always put the horse’s needs above their own emotions, and that is not something we take for granted. We are incredibly grateful for each and every one of you.

Rest easy, Elsa.

While it is possible for our 911 operators to locate callers who use a cell phone to dial 911, the quickest and most efficient way to get help is to always know your exact location.

🚑 Always take note of the street address of your accommodations—- not the house name.

🚑 When visiting the beach, pay attention to the street you access the beach from, the beach access name or what milepost you are closest to. Every second counts in an emergency!

🚑 If available, send someone to meet the first responders at the nearest access point to help emergency responders locate you quickly.

NEWS RELEASE: Cape Hatteras National Seashore begins cleanup of unoccupied fallen house in Rodanthe; the beach from Sea Haven Drive to South Shore Drive in Rodanthe is temporarily closed.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) is beginning cleanup activities at the site of an unoccupied house collapse at 24131 Ocean Drive in Rodanthe, North Carolina. The house likely collapsed around 2:30 a.m. this morning, May 28.

To help ensure the safety of visitors and allow for cleanup activities to occur, an approximately one-mile section of beach is closed from Sea Haven Drive to South Shore Drive. Due to the direction that the debris is expected to drift, visitors are urged to avoid the beaches north of Sea Haven Drive into the southern portion of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Dangerous debris may be present on the beach and in the water. Additional beach closures may be necessary as the debris spreads and cleanup efforts proceed.

The Seashore anticipates the arrival of a debris removal contractor, hired by the property owner, to arrive this afternoon.

This morning’s unfortunate collapse of the house at 24131 Ocean Drive is the sixth house collapse on Seashore beaches over the past four years. Learn more about the threatened oceanfront structures that border the Seashore at: go.nps.gov/cahatos.
