Happy Dragonfly Week!

The Dragonfly (Anisoptera; Aniso meaning uneven, and ptera meaning wing) is one of the many beautiful insects that grace our Pollinator Garden.

They are characterized by their long bodies with two narrow pairs of intricately veined, membranous wings that, while generally transparent, may have colored markings -- dragonflies can be found near most freshwater habitats worldwide.

These predatory insects can feed on prey ranging from worms to crustaceans, from tadpoles to small fish, and can make homes in even the most inhospitable of environments.

Truly an impressive species and we are so happy to celebrate them this week!
Come by, take a walk on the Nature Trail, and see if you can't snap a photo of 'em.

Curious about the birds you spot at the beach?

Join Rangers for weekly Bird Walk programs on both Ocracoke and Hatteras Island! You'll take a stroll through secondary dunes and then head out on the beach. Come meet winged residents and those traveling the Atlantic Flyway. Binoculars are available. (60 minutes) Programs are through Labor Day.

📍 Ocracoke Island: every Tuesday at 8:30am | Meet outside at the beach access parking lot adjacent to the NPS Ocracoke Campground and Ramp 68.

📍 Hatteras Island: every Thursday at 8:30am | Meet at the Lifeguarded beach parking lot adjacent to Old Lighthouse Beach, Buxton.

In honor of National Ocean Month, we’re celebrating all month long. Here are some of our favorite facts about the ocean:

🦠The ocean is where life began over 3.5 billion years ago.

🌏The ocean covers over 70% of the Earth's surface and includes over 96% of the Earth's water.

🌙 Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth and can be seen from the moon!

🌊The deepest part of the ocean is in the Marianas Trench, nearly 7 miles beneath the waves!

🐠 Coral reefs cover only 1/50th of the ocean floor, but about one quarter of all the marine species make coral reefs their home.

🌑 No light penetrates the ocean at depths greater than 3,280 feet. Aided by deep diving rovers and remote sensing cameras, scientists are still discovering new species beneath the waves.

🏄‍♀️The Gulf Stream transports more water than all of the Earth's rivers combined.

⛰️The mid-ocean ridge crisscrosses the globe for over 40,000 miles and is the largest geological feature on Earth.
