Built in 1944, this property was home to Lois Smith Rhodes from her mid-20s until she entered a skilled nursing facility at age 94 in 2021. She and her husband, Theo, raised their children (Teresa and Trent) here, and she lived in this home about 70 years before she moved to the nursing home in Henderson. Lois worked as an administrative assistant at Freed-Hardeman University, serving president and university namesake N.B. Hardeman and others on the faculty. Her husband, Theo, owned an Esso’s service station on Main Street, and they cared for cows and many beloved plants on these acres. You’ll still see Theo’s muscadine vines in the backyard today, along with pecan, pear and many other species of mature trees in the yard. The Rhodes family owned dozens of acres of farmland on both sides of this end of Hill Avenue. In the spring, you’ll see buttercups that Lois planted more than 70 years ago. They were from her childhood home, also on Hill Avenue, that was destroyed during a March 1952 tornado. That storm claimed the lives of her parents and younger brother, along with several other residents. She spoke about them often and was able to attend a ceremony unveiling a marker on the Chester County Courthouse lawn that commemorated her family and other victims. Lois was a wonderful neighbor to Jason and Dawn Bramblett and their children, Drew and Hallie, from the time the family moved next door in 2003. To honor her legacy and provide a place of hospitality, the Brambletts purchased this house in March 2022. Working with Taylor Construction and Restoration, they completely renovated it. The farmhouse style sink in the kitchen was actually the original bathtub from the home. The Rhodes Home of Henderson officially opened to serve guests in August 2023. All kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, bedding and couches are new. Some period pieces have been purchased from Back In Time Antiques and Boutique, Bray’s Furniture and Cox’s Antiques in Henderson, where you may enjoy shopping. We have a number of charming local restaurants, stores, spas, boutiques, parks and much more in Chester County! Visit ChesterCountyChamber.com/Explore to find more information.

After a tornado destroys her childhood home and takes the lives of her parents and younger brother March 21, 1952, Lois Smith Rhodes moves buttercups from the empty lot to the home that she begins sharing with her husband and one-year-old daughter later that year. Both pieces of land are on Hill Avenue in Henderson. Seventy years later, those buttercups still bloom as a beautiful tribute to her family.
