The sea turtle season on Holden Beach is definitely winding down...but it is not over! Teams are still on the beach evenings. We have 7 nests left to go.

The quantities of our 35 year celebration shirt are also dwindling down. We are out of some sizes already. Shirts are still available at the Lighthouse Gift Shop and also from our website at www.hbturtlewatch.org. If ordering by mail, it's best if you email our shirt team before you send money to make sure the sizes you want are still available: [email protected]

We are not reordering shirts. These shirts are only available for one season...when they're gone..they are gone!

Busy time on the beach. Three nests closed last night...but four teams will collar new nests today. When you see a nest that looks like this...with a collar on the top and a trench leading to the ocean you know that this nest will hatch soon. We put these collars on nests 50 days after the mother lays it. Typical incubation is 50-60 days.

When will the sea turtle season end this year? The last recorded nest was laid on July 26, 50 days after that is September 14. It may take longer for these hatchlings to incubate because the sand is getting cooler---but we expect the season will be over by the end of September.

We have upgraded the beds at the house! The downstairs bedrooms had double mattresses with box springs and wooden frames. I am pleased to tell you that all four doubles have been replaced with queen mattresses and platform frames.

In addition, we replaced the upstairs queen mattress with a king mattress and platform frame. The master bedroom has a new thick king mattress. 🛌

The turtle patrol is busy morning and night on the beach these days. You may see us with red flashlights when on a nest at night, but these lights are only for our navigation purposes. While red flashlights are better than bright white lights, they can still disorient turtles and hatchlings. Stop by and chat when you see us on the beach.
