Your hosts are Dave and Marlies. We're from small town in California called San Jose ;) Originally from Switzerland, Marlies met Dave while schooling in California. Suddenly, both our kids are in college, where does the time go?! Our place is just above Kailua-Kona, in the perfect temperate zone, pretty much in the 80s all year round. Quiet and peaceful, it is minutes from world class beaches and

Kona town. An easy ten minute drive from the airport, relax and enjoy a beverage in the tropical garden setting. Take in the ocean views from this newer, quiet neighborhood. Your suite has a separate entrance and it's own lanai (patio area). It has a quality, brand new bed in 2017 and an amazing bathroom with natural stone tile and granite counter top. It shares no walls with the main house, it's separated by a breezeway for a peaceful, private stay. Single level, easy entry without stairs. Great place to escape and enjoy the big island. Any questions don't hesitate to ask, Mahalo!

Our goes out to Queen Emma Kalanikaumaka’amano Kaleleonālani Na’ea Rooke. She was Queen to King Kamehameha IV from 1856 to his death in 1863. In 1859 Queen Emma established Queen’s Hospital to save rapidly declining native Hawaiian population, providing free services to those suffering from introduced illnesses like smallpox and influenza. In 1867 she founded the St Andrews Priory School for Girls.
Thanks for the Aloha!

Only In Hawaii

With so many charming towns in Hawaii, Kailua-Kona really does stand out.

You'll find everything from breakfast and coffee to seafood and Italian fare.

Why do my feet look so white?! 😆

02/25/2018

This beautiful wild horse was blocking our way on the narrow road in the Waipio Valley. So we got out and made friends!

02/25/2018

The Spirit of Aloha is evident in Waipio Valley.

Ever had a malasada?!

The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, known as “Honu,” symbolizes good luck, endurance and long life. Turtles can show up as a person's guardian spirit, known as “Aumakua.” When lost, turtles are excellent navigators and often find their way home!

The warm, crystal clear waters of Kealakekua Bay are a snorkeler’s delight.
The four ways to get here are:
1) Hike. You start at the “Captain Cook Monument Trail” in the town of Captain Cook, about 1/2 hour south of Kona town. Go early, like 7am to somewhat beat the heat. Bring reef safe sunscreen. It’s almost 4 miles round trip and somewhat challenging if you’re not used to hiking much.
2) Boat trip. It’s about 20 minutes from Keauhou Bay where most of the tour operators go from.
3) Swim. Your host does this quite often. Not easy but stunning sea life, including dolphins. 1 mile each way from Na’poopoo Pier.
4) Kayak operators near the Na’poopoo Pier.

No filter. We love the flowers growing on the property 🌺🌴

01/23/2018

One of our favorite places to snorkel. Get here by hike (1-2 hours round trip!) or water (swim a mile, boat, or kayak), but you cannot drive here.
TIP: If you get here early, like around 8am, you’ll have the place pretty much to yourself...for awhile.

01/19/2018

One of our favorite beaches on Big Island is Manini’owali (aka Kua Bay).
The crystal clear waters can be calm and beautiful, but don’t get caught off-guard by the periodic swells!
Always be aware while having fun, the ocean can be fun beyond imagination and scary as heck all in the same day!

Commonly called the Jello Mold, Pu’u Wa’a Wa’a is a state park with a small trail network. It’s 3.5 miles of up, up, up for 2000 vertical feet. It was a challenging trail run to say the least, but the views were priceless.
Aloha, y’all!

Lol, another apple banana tree update:
She is growing right before our eyes!!
From yesterday to today her flower has burst into this beautiful ‘pre-cluster’ of baby fruit. Have an Aloha day, y’all 🍍🌴

Another shot of the apple banana tree we planted ten months ago.
You can see the beginnings of a pod in the center, so exciting! And the ‘baby trees’ are a surprise too :)

12/15/2017

Hard to believe she planted this apple banana tree in 10 months ago in February! They told us it would bear fruit in about 18 months and we couldn’t imagine it.
No fertilizers, no pesticides.

So exciting! Hawaiian Christmas carollers came by last night 🎄

Who doesn’t love chocolate?!

The Original Hawaiian Chocolate tour is well worth a visit. Hawaii is the only place in the United States where cocoa pods can grow. This is a family business that’s fun and intimate, not a factory operation. The tour is about an hour.
It’s a beautiful 20-25 minute drive south of our place.
Aloha!

10/18/2017

The landscaping at our place is tropical paradise 🌴☀️

Our single biggest event of the year.
Either stay home and relax that day, go to the other side of the island, or go to Kona town and take in the excitement!

Good Morning Hawai'i
Turn it up and listen to the birdsong we get to hear every morning 🌴

09/27/2017

These are Hawaiian Pheasants.
We have many unique birds on the Big Island. The morning birdsong at our place is beautiful beyond description.
I don't know why she was pecking on the window but it startled us at first!
