Did the scales outside provide a pleasant fortune too, and were sodas served at a fountain bar, with leather and chrome stools? Did the souvenirs sold say “Lewiston” and was it called Fun Country, USA back then? Was parking just w***y nilly, pull in however you want and did big trees offer shade for your car? Was the film back then made by Kodak, was it developed here and did most people have a camera? What was the most common prescription, and what doctor wrote most of the orders? What gifts could you buy at a drug store, did they offer to wrap the gifts too? Is this where locals would get paregoric, epsom salts, witch hazel and mercurochrome—before they knew it had mercury? Did folks meet neighbors here, find a magazine or boys buy a model car kit? Was it busy from open to close, did those scales stay out after hours? Old photos give glimpses of life long ago, of things we forgot we’ve forgotten. Memories forever cherished. In Lewiston, Pure Lewiston.

ICONIC—adjective, very famous or popular, especially being considered to represent a particular time or space.

With a timeless familiarity that has told the residents and visitors of Lewiston, “You’re home” for generations, Talley’s continues to be that door to yesterday’s memories, that window to today’s connections and that bridge to tomorrow’s hopes. With a shiny timber bar that consistently serves up good cheer and robust conversation, these stools have held the cherished champions of Lewiston life and lore, in every season, ranging back to this town’s early days. The faces have changed, on both sides of the bar, but the strong fiber of this community remains the same. It’s more than the frothy beer and fabulous burgers that draw people here, in side by sides, on snowmobiles or riding in cars parked zig zagged in an always full parking lot. It’s the people, their stories, their laughter and their friendship. Within these walls, folks have found the whispered encouragement of a church, the wise lessons of a school, the raucous entertainment of a circus, the affirming fellowship of a fraternity, all wrapped in stacked logs with a screen door that snaps shut like grandma’s. It’s iconic. And when Lewiston is mentioned, in the world beyond 49756, the first thing most folks say, with a smile, is “Talley’s!” That’s Pure Lewiston, with a side of fries.

It changes, this close community of warm hearts and hardy residents. Soon after blinding blizzards and drifting storms, they come, with their bright lights and roaring engines, snow slicing runners and bundled riders. They’ll make offers to help the stranded, get supplies for their elderly neighbors and meet up with friends and neighbors for brews and burgers downtown. They’ve been waiting for this. These are the days they live and long for. They’re tough and rough and ready. This is Lewiston, for the WIN, in Winter.

What do you do on a SNOWY Wednesday "Day off" in Lewiston, MI?

01/10/2024

Snow coming down, but not as much as they forecasted. This was at 4pm Tuesday 1-9-24.

Through the years, we’ve seen high hills of heavy snow down Kneeland, tempting children of all ages with their skis and sleds. The white stuff seems to know, it’s welcome here. Winter warriors long to mount their snowmobiles and hit the trails. We’re tough. We’ll dress in layers, gloves and boots, but we’ll be out there. It’s four full seasons of fun and frolic and there’s nothing quite like meeting up with friends at Talley’s or other local anchors, or curling up beside the cottage hearth with a fresh new layer of snow still falling. We put the WIN in winter, in Lewiston, Pure Lewiston.

When you see the collection of Gingerbread Houses make their debut downtown at Holiday Fest, you’re going to say, “Why didn’t we do that?!” It’s a great way to promote a business—do a little replica, celebrate your family or capture your cottage. And here’s a FREE opportunity to get it all done in an evening! The Little Roadside Market and the Lewiston DDA have partnered to offer a Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop, in the comfortable Meeting Room at The Lewiston Library, Tuesday, November 21st. at 6:00 p.m. The workshop is free and includes pizza and a beverage. You will be decorating an already assembled gingerbread house—giving it the pizazz and embellishment to make it a standout in the Gingerbread Lane display at Holiday Fest 2023! You will leave your decorated house at the library where it will be safely and securely stored until Holiday Fest on December 10th. It will be displayed there through the holiday season, after which, you may pick it up. Come as a family to create yours—there is a limit of only two houses provided per household. Anyone is welcome to attend. Participants are asked to bring some components of decorating—gum drops, sprinkles, pretzel sticks, marshmallows, etc. to share with others. Be creative! Stop in The Library to sign up or call 989-786-2985 to reserve your spot in the gingerbread construction zone! This is going to be so much fun! Lewiston sparkles at the holiday!
