When three generations scuba dive together for the first time…
It’s such a special feeling to help this family's dream come true!
Who’s been to the Cathedrals of Lāna’i and had it all to yourself?
There has been so much magic out on the waters—and such crystal clear waters the last two days! This frisky calf swam by the boat this morning. Notice the spreading “footprint” from when the calf’s powerful fluke kick displaces water! We’re used to seeing these slicks on top of the water, but it is also beautiful from below! This calf heads out on the long journey to Alaska only about 5 weeks after being born.
(Also, volume on for whalesong!)
I can’t wait to see the footage Daniel Sullivan Photography took of this moment too!
What a day it was, both under and above the water.
Also, listen for the whales!
Join us to snorkel or scuba at Olowalu, Maui’s “Mother Reef,” identified by Dr Sylvia Earle as a Mission Blue Hope Spot. The diversity of coral here is amazing. This area provides coral larvae for the surrounding islands.
After the mother humpback dives, watch for the calf and two dolphins! 💙🐋🐋🐬💙
We were just returning from our scuba trip, and the whales kept putting on a show!

Mom and calf completely surprised us when they breached—and then swam right under our boat! Here’s a taste of that beautiful moment.
There was a whale directly under the boat—watch to the end to see it surface!
There was a whale right under the boat!
Today three playful juvenile male humpback whales were curious about our boat. At the beginning of the video, if you look closely you can see the whale under the water… and then it blows a jet of bubbles all around us before surfacing and diving, fluke and all!

The graceful majesty of the humpback whales. They often seem to be more active when the seas are a little rough!
Yesterday we took a group of intrepid photographers out to whale watch. We found a very active group of whales! Photographer Daniel Sullivan guided their attention. Captain Mikal kept the boat positioned for maximum stability and good angles, and Dr Amber Iverson interpreted the behavior. We can’t wait to see their photographs!

We love seeing photography happen aboard our boat. Check out the previous post for his stunning photos of this competition pod!
Sound on! We could hear the whalesong right through the hull of our Maui Pacific Divers boat. This was some of the most powerful and magical whalesong I’ve heard.
I looked down, and the whale was swimming under the boat…

The whales have arrived!
Such a special encounter with humpback whales today on our private charter whale watch!
Diving and snorkeling off Lana’i
Second Cathedrals off of Lana’i is a gem! This shot isn’t from inside the lava tube, but of other explorations around the reef. Brilliant visibility, no other boats, and so many fish! Divers below, snorkeler above, and our captain aboard Paikea! Everyone in the family is happy!
Did I mention, our boat can get to Lana’i in only an hour? (Except when we come upon whales or dolphins, of course!🐬🐋🐬 On THIS DAY, it was bottle nose dolphins and whales! It looked like the dolphins were pestering the humpbacks!)
Flying Fish off Maui’s Coast
Flying fish are straight out of Avatar! These mālolo, as they’re called in Hawaiian, were startled by our passing boat and put on an incredible display in the morning light. It’s moments like these that make being on the water so awe-inspiring!
