In 1976, Disney filmed parts of Pete's Dragon on the Point Buchon Trail. Pete's Dragon starred Mickey Rooney, Helen Reddy, Shelly Winters, Sean Marshall, James Dale, and a giant animated dragon. During production, Disney built a lighthouse on a rocky outpost in Moñtana de Oro State Park. The light from the fake lighthouse was so bright, the production had to get special permission from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Morro Bay to use the beacon during filming. Once production had wrapped, hopes of saving the structure or re-locating it to Disneyland faded as the building had deteriorated and had to be dismantled. However, hikers can still enjoy the spectacular scenery by visiting the Point Buchon Trail, which is owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and open Th-M year-round. Point Buchon Trail offers some of the most scenic views of the Central Coast coastline, preserved and protected with help from PG&E. The trail is 6.6 miles roundtrip and is accessed through Montaña de Oro State Park.

Right in the heart of downtown Morro Bay is the Morro Bay Main Street Farmers Market. This certified California Farmers Market takes up two city blocks every Saturday from 2:30 to 5:00pm. And in the summer, closing time is extended to 5:30pm. This is a great spot to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables, juices, food, and artisan crafts… all in the shadow of Morro Rock.

This is the anniversary of the Morro Bay Mojo, when an enormous wave slammed into a luxury yacht carrying legendary actor George C. Scott, his wife Trish Van Devere, and three crew members. The M.V. Mojo was an 82-foot vessel that Scott had chartered to visit Morro Bay. While the Mojo was docked in Morro Bay Harbor preparing to depart, the Coast Guard and local authorities began receiving reports of choppy seas and 20-foot swells. They ordered the Mojo not to leave the safety of Morro Bay Harbor, but Scott commanded the crew to leave anyway, and the ship headed for the mouth of the harbor.

Local resident Scott Redd was on Morro Rock with a small handheld camera as the Mojo was leaving and captured the moment a massive wave slammed head-on into the vessel. The impact rocked the ship backwards, injuring Ms. Van Devere and the three crew members aboard. The wave also caused significant damage to Mojo, which spent the next year in dry dock getting repaired. Today; Mojo still sails for charters out of Newport Beach, and has even been featured on film and television projects like The Bachelor. But back in 1978, Redd’s images of the massive wave tearing into an Oscar-winner’s ship were picked up by major news outlets across the country, and the legend of the Morro Bay Mojo was born.
