Cash-strapped Alliance Air’s flights disrupted as nearly 100 pilots report sick

Flights of the only state-owned fixed wing aircraft airline — Alliance Air (AA) — were disrupted on Monday with a large number of pilots reporting sick. The cash-strapped regional airline, which is going to be sold off soon, has been facing pilot discontent as they allege not being paid as per agreement.
Almost 100 pilots, representing over 80% of Alliance AI’s total pilot strength, have reported sick. Over 60% departures have been cancelled," said sources. The airline did not say how many pilots reported sick Monday. An AA spokesperson admitted the airline on Monday witnessed "certain disruption of flights due to operational reasons. The unforeseen disruption in logistic chain is directly impacting timely availability of spares restricting the airline to fly aircraft due to safety reasons combined with a section of dissatisfied pilots who en masse reported sick without giving any prior intimation… resulted in cancellation of flight operation on 24 routes."

Vistara operates its first Boeing B787 long-haul flight on SAF

Vistara became India’s first carrier to operate a wide-body aircraft using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on a long-haul route. Vistara is a joint venture between Tata group and Singapore Airlines.

The flight was between Charleston International Airport, South Carolina to Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, and was operated in partnership with The Boeing Company and GE Aerospace, on Vistara’s newest GEnx-powered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, the fourth in its fleet, it said on Thursday in a release. The International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) responsibilities under the CORSIA, or Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, a carbon offset and reduction programme, will also require the Indian aviation industry to implement SAF.

Except for airlines from the least developed countries, small island developing countries, and landlocked countries, as well as those whose combined carbon dioxide emissions per revenue tonne-kilometre are less than 0.5% of the total global contribution, the offsetting requirement for the majority of aircraft operators, including Indian airlines for international operations, will become mandatory from 2027 on.

New airport terminals: Chennai 0 - Bengaluru 1

International passengers will be able to fly out of a swanky new terminal at Chennai airport next month with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) planning to commission one part of the integrated terminal to boost its passenger handling capacity. Around the same time, Bengaluru airport will also open its new terminal for passengers. That is where the similarity between the two airports ends. Though the two major airports in the south will add terminals at the same time, Chennai airport has miles to go because the facility at Bengaluru will be far superior in terms of passenger handling capacity. The capacity of Bengaluru airport will shoot up to 60 million passengers per year when the new building is thrown open. In contrast, the same metric for Chennai will be approximately 30 million passengers per year.
Another five million passengers will be added after around three years when the existing old international arrival building is demolished and rebuilt. That’s about it. Chennai airport cannot grow any further at its current location in Meenambakkam because of space constraints, while Bengaluru will add another 20 million passengers when it starts construction of another new terminal in July 2023.

SpiceJet’s Q2 was turbulent but outlook likely better

The September quarter results of budget airline SpiceJet Ltd. did not move the needle on the stock, given the weak performance. So far in calendar year 2022, shares of the airline have declined 43%. Q2 earnings took a hit primarily because of high aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and a weak rupee. In fact, average ATF prices were up by as much as 87% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the last quarter.
An 11% y-o-y increase in yield driven by a rebound in travel, though, offered some cushion. Yield is a measure of pricing. As such, the company reported Ebitdar (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, amortization and rent) loss of ₹387.9 crore in Q2. In Q1, the loss was at ₹266.2 crore. Adding to the woes was the company’s weak balance sheet.

However, it is worth noting that SpiceJet’s passenger load factor at 85% was ahead of IndiGo’s 79%. The latter is India’s largest domestic airline by market share. The outlook offers some comfort as Q3 is a seasonally strong quarter. As analysts at ICICI Securities point out, the average number of daily fliers in November to-date stands at about 385,000 versus 368,000 for the month of October.

“We anticipate (SpiceJet’s) yields to improve, given the festive demand, in conjunction with better operating profitability as restructuring benefits kick in from Q3FY23," said analysts at Nuvama Research in a report on 15 November.

“The addition of the 737-8 MAX aircrafts will likely help buttress growth – higher capacity (220 seats versus 180 in 737 NG) along with greater fuel efficiency (about 20% more efficient) – will help boost SpiceJet’s competitiveness.

Jet Airways, under its new owner the Jalan-Kalrock consortium, faces delay in relaunch which is scheduled for this month, The Economic Times reported on September 19 citing people with knowledge of the matter.

The first deadlock is over proposed leasing contracts between management and engine makers. Jet wants engine makers Pratt & Whitney (P&W) or CFM to bear a larger share of the costs whenever an engine is replaced, according to ET sources. The second deadlock is with Jet’s lenders seeking settlement of dues before the airline buys or leases aircraft.

The lenders wants the new owner to obtain a no-objection certif**ate before leasing or purchasing planes.

The consortium has offered payments of Rs 380 crore in instalments and a 9.5 percent stake in the airline to the lenders.

Welcome competition from Air India; India big enough to have two mega airlines

India is currently witnessing the creation of two mega airlines, with domestic market leader IndiGo on an expansion spree and Tata Group consolidating its four carriers under Air India. IndiGo’s new CEO Pieter Elbers, who took over barely three weeks back, has hit the ground running and tells TOI inn an exclusive interview how the airline will evolve over the coming months in terms of offering a more comfortable product and a larger network. He welcomes the upcoming changes at the Maharaja, saying the 1.4-billion strong India easily has the capacity to have two big airlines. We have a lot of planes on order at IndiGo. We continue to enhance the product and the difference can be seen in planes that are brand new and the earlier ones. Given toy’s supply chain challenges we will like to hold on to planes and continue using them. For that reason, we remain cautious on giving any timeframe to change seats while our ambition is to have comfortable seats on all our aircraft. Our catering product is very different from what we had six months ago (in terms of onboard menu). We have more variety now. We recently started disembarking from three doors instead of two to allow passengers to get off quickly. The focus on punctuality, safety and courteous service remains steadfast.

Concerns raised over facilities at Chennai airport’s new integrated terminal

Airport and airline staff have raised concerns regarding the new integrated terminal building at Chennai airport, which is likely to be opened by the end of this year.

On September 15 and 16, Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Sanjeev Kumar inspected the multi-level car parking and the integrated terminal building and reviewed the work. During the inspection, he saw the facilities in both buildings and gave his feedback to the airport authorities.

Sources in the airport said there are quite a few concerns that have surfaced a few months ahead of the opening of the integrated terminal and expect them to be addressed before the inauguration. The terminal, already ridden with delays, has been built in two phases, and the first phase will be finished by the end of this year after which the international terminal will be moved there.

Air India’s quest for 30% clearly indicates a merger with Vistara

Thursday afternoon, Air India unveiled its transformation plan named “Vihaan. AI”. The reactions ranged from calling this a rebranding of Air India to wondering how the airline will climb from 8% ish market share to 30% in five years. More often than not, the context becomes clear after the dust settles and that is exactly what I did this morning. Re-reading the press release and re-calculating the numbers.

The airline wants to re-establish itself as best in class in customer service, technology, product, reliability and hospitality. I have serious doubts on the technology part – considering how Vistara’s website and overall systems have been since 2015. However, this article will focus more on the market share part. Over the next 5 years, Air India will strive to increase its market share to at least 30% in the domestic market while signif**antly growing the international routes from the present market share.

In an environment where the load factors do not vary a lot from one airline to another, market share has always been a function of capacity deployment. Air India has already announced a plan to induct five widebody and 25 narrowbody aircraft. The airline is also moving fast to get grounded aircraft back in service, which will further help it with adding capacity.

Chennai Airport eyes 300 acres to increase handling capacity

Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to acquire about 300 acres in chunks to increase the passenger handling capacity of Chennai airport after commissioning the new integrated terminal in December/January.
The decision was made after AAI Chairman Sanjeev Kumar and the board evaluated the new terminal's construction and talked about the need for more airport land so that more facilities such as parking lots and parallel taxiways could be built to boost passenger capacity to 55 million per year.
After the ongoing work including the construction of the new terminal is completed, the passenger handling capacity will be raised from the current 20 million passengers per year to 35 million per year.
While negotiations with state government representatives to obtain land parcels for further work are on, the deadline for establishing the new port was set for December or January. The second airport is being planned. But the existing airport will need to add more facilities so that it can handle passenger traffic till the new airport is ready. The airport will need land to build a parallel taxiway for a second runway on the northern side closer to the Officers Training Academy.
There is also a need to shift the cargo terminal so that the space can be used to create parking space for planes. The entire space near the terminals can then be allocated only for passenger flights," said a senior official of AAI.

Pilots’ salaries at Akasa Air head skywards

Akasa Air, India’s newest airline, is leading on pay hikes for pilots, marking a reversal of the pandemic-era aviation squeeze that saw salary cuts and job losses globally, said people with knowledge of the matter. This is likely to set off salary increases at other carriers to ensure they have enough pilots as air traffic recovers amid fleet expansion and Gulf carriers embarking on a hiring spree, they said.Akasa raised pilot pay by an average 60% — captains will start at Rs 4.5 lakh a month and first officers at Rs 1.8 lakh — from October. This is against Rs 2.79 lakh and Rs 1.11 lakh, respectively, at present. Depending on experience and hours flown, the pay could be higher. At the maximum limit of 70 hours per month, a captain can earn Rs 8 lakh, about 28% more than Rs 6.25 lakh now, said the people cited above. The carrier needs more pilots for the rapid expansion it has planned, said people with knowledge of the matter. The airline currently has four Boeing 737 Maxs and plans to induct 18 more planes by March 2023. An airline typically needs 12 pilots per aircraft, including reserves.

Air India Group to shift to Mega Gurugram centre by next March; to start vacating Government-owned premises from this month

The Tata Group will house the Air India Group - AI, AI Express and AirAsia India )that will soon be merged with AI Express) at a mega Gurugram facility by next March. It will start vacating the government-owned premises. The move to consolidate workspaces is aimed as an “integral part of its transformation agenda… to improve collaboration, strengthen the organisation’s culture, upgrade employees’ work environment and facilities, and more easily deploy new technology,” AI said in a statement.Beginning this month, a number of Air India offices presently housed in government owned premises across the country are being vacated. The largest base of staff, located in Delhi’s Airlines House, Safdarjung Complex, GSD Complex and IGI Terminal One, will move to an interim office space in Gurugram, National Central Region (NCR), before ultimately relocating to a campus at the newly-constructed Vatika One-On-One development in early 2023. Besides Air India, the Vatika One-on-One campus is being provisioned to accommodate Air India Express and Air Asia India.AI CEO & MD Campbell Wilson said: “The consolidation of many premises under one roof, and the evolution from a regionalised to centralised structure, is a signif**ant milestone in Air India’s transformation journey. Aside from improving the opportunity for collaboration, upgrading employees’ work environment and enhancing effectiveness both within and across functions, it is a powerful catalyst for cultural transformation. Together with the deployment of new technology and communication platforms, and the co-location of Air India with sister airlines, it is an exciting step forward.
