Italian artist Giovanni Tresso offers a glimpse into the portals of the human soul. Each portrait is the result of an intimate interlude between the commissioner and the artist that fuses painting and photography. Tresso meets the subject in person and builds his paintings on a collection of impromptu snapshots that reveal microexpressions and movements indicative of their personality. The key is to catch the sitter off guard, so that they abandon their defensive social barriers and expose their authentic essence. Echoing his background in design and advertising, Tress's works possess a distinctive graphic aesthetic. The facial traits are carved out using negative space and a highly contrasting bichromatic palette of white and either blue, red, green, or black. This, combined with the imposing scale of the pieces, garners a powerful magnetic quality that keeps the viewer glued to the canvas.

Getulio Alviani (1939-2018)
a leading figure in the kinetic art movement,
Alviani's work transcended mediums and disciplines, including painting, printmaking,sculpture, jewellery, architecture and industrial design. He was one of
the main animators of the aesthetic debate on programmed art and has been internationally recognised since the beginning of the sixties.
Starting in 1961, Alviani was included in novet tendencije (new tendencies),a series of exhibitions in Zagreb, Croatia, which gathered concrete and
constructive artists who sought to create work that reflected the era's advancements in mass production. In 1965 he participated in the exhibition the responsive eye at the Moma in New York, aged just 26, the exhibition placed him at the international forefront of the programmed art movement.
In 2000, Moma included his work in the exhibition open ends, a show dedicated to the most pioneering artists of the last four decades.
Alviani participated in the Venice biennale four times, in 1964, 1984,1986 and 1993, and in 1968 he exhibited at documenta 4 in Kassel.
Today his works are housed in more than 50 museum collections worldwide,including the
Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Buenos Aries and la Galleria Nazionale in Rome.

No exhibition of optical art is complete without recognising the achievements of Alviani.

Tim Kent Studio Visit

Kent’s designs are based on images from personal archives and memories, as well as appropriated images from public archives. These compositions coalesce in paint, which is applied by scrapping, knifing, brushing, spattering. Supporting these actions is an underlying perspective design. Using long, hand-made rulers to trace intricate perspectival systems, which not only add context to the subject but also interfere and impose on the subject, Kent creates a logic of memory rather than merely one of measurement. These foundational lines remain visible in finished paintings, nesting around figures, cradling walls, and branching off into deeper space. In this way, his use of perspective shifts its semiotics from one that aims to define, focus, and clarify, to one that introduces complementary spaces and ideas, leaving viewers with the impression of simultaneous splices of time compressed into sometimes glitchy, shifting slides of experience. The perspective grid becomes a visual metaphor for the interconnectivity of how we construct our visual world and its influence across every level of existence.

On March 30, 2022 Wirth Galerie poses these questions to the public with an art exhibition of Mark Landis’ paintings, hosted by Salomon Arts Gallery in Tribeca from 6:00-9pm. The evening will include a discussion on the topic of value and authenticity with the filmmakers who produced “Art and Craft”, the documentary highlighting Mark’s “philanthropic exploits”: Jennifer Grausman, Mark Becker, and Sam Cullman.
