Last night had perfect conditions for star gazing and aurora watching, not a cloud in the sky, a half moon and cold temperatures. The KP index wasnt that high but guests on our tours were treated to an absolute explosion in the sky for several hours in various shades of pinks and green which made for an amazing display. Just goes to show that the KP index is not a reliable indicator to be able to see awesome displays like this! We have plenty of space on upcoming tours, visit our website for more information www.alaska-wildlife-guide.com

Don't let the weather worry you, we still had quite a show last night! People often call us when the weather is overcast and worried, they won't be able to see the Aurora. The weather here is often unpredictable and it can change quickly such as last night. If you are concerned about booking, don't let a few clouds get in the way of a possible beautiful show of lights!

Ever wondered why we see different colors in the Aurora? This is why.

Ever wondered why we see different colors in the Aurora? This is why.

The aurora borealis is usually green in color, although it can also appear to be a range of other colors like red, blue, pink, and purple. The color of the aurora is determined by the altitude in which it appears. Different atmosphere compounds, like nitrogen and oxygen, are found at different altitudes. When charged particles from the Sun enter our atmosphere, they interact with those compounds, and the aurora is the visible result. Depending on which compounds are being excited by the Sun’s charged particles, different colors will appear. It was a little bit chilly today in North Pole 🥶❄️.

Clear skies overnight allowed temperatures in the Interior and West Coast to drop well below normal overnight. Here are a few low temps through 9AM AKST. 🥶
Fairbanks hit 20 below for the first time this season, falling right on the date of the long-term average (11/19).
