The new fishing regs are here!

Looking for some weekend reading material? These new regulations go into effect on April 1, so be sure to take a look before heading out on the water next week.

Some of these changes include:
-A new registration requirement for small fishing tournaments
-A daily bag limit of 10 panfish in Lake Mendota in Dane County
-Changing the musky minimum length limit to 50 inches on the Wisconsin River from Lake DuBay Dam upstream to the first dam in Merrill
-Creating an urban fishing pond in the Village of Suamico in Brown County
-New bag limits for some of Wisconsin's favorite gamefish, including walleye and musky

You can read the 2024-2025 fishing regulations and a list of all of these changes here: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/fishing/regulations

Buy a license and cast a line into your favorite waters. All residents and non-residents over 16 must possess a 2024-2025 general fishing license to fish in Wisconsin. Annual resident licenses cost only $20.

Fishing licenses can be purchased online via Go Wild or in person at a registered sales location or DNR Service Centers.

In one of many efforts to make our human experience on this planet better, I participate in organizing an annual ice-fishing event with the WGAS Group. All of the proceeds raised (and I mean ALL) go to supporting outdoor sporting events which include but are not limited to: hunting, fishing, and general support of our community.
This year our ice fishing tourney event is scheduled for Saturday Feb 10th 2024. You will be able to register at several local establishments with the main event hosted at the Oconto Break Water. There will be door prizes, prizes for the largest fish caught, bucket raffles and other fun activities.
We do have raffle tickets for sale (only 250 sold) with the chance to win cash prizes (see image). Tickets are $50 each. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket, please let me know. Otherwise, I will look forward to seeing you on the ice.

While snow hasn’t made a lasting appearance yet in much of Wisconsin, we are eagerly waiting for the upcoming winter wildlife images to be collected by Snapshot Wisconsin trail cameras, like this image collected last year of an otter admiring their snowy surroundings in Vilas County!

Want to check out more winter Snapshot Wisconsin trail camera images? Thousands of these Snapshot Wisconsin images can be found on Zooniverse, an online crowdsourcing site where anyone can enjoy the wildlife images collected throughout the state. You can even join fellow volunteers in classifying trail camera images, where you identify which wildlife species is found in each photo!

Visit www.SnapshotWisconsin.org to view and classify trail camera photos from across the state!

Despite the relatively mild weather we've had lately, many Wisconsin lakes and ponds have already developed a thin layer of ice.

While it may look solid to the naked eye, that isn't always the case. There can be cracks and changes in the ice thickness that you won’t see until it’s too late.

Temperature swings throughout the day, strong winds, currents and underground springs can all create weak spots in the ice. These factors and more are why no ice is ever considered safe, especially this early in the season.

As lakes begin to freeze, here are a few basic ice safety tips to remember:

– Carry a cell phone, and let people know where you are going and when you’ll return home.

– Wear proper clothing and equipment, including a life jacket or a float coat, to help you stay afloat and to help maintain body heat.

– Wear ice creepers attached to boots to prevent slipping on clear ice.

– Carry a spud bar to check the ice while walking to new areas.

– Carry a few spikes and a length of light rope in an easily accessible pocket to help pull yourself – or others – out of the ice.

– If you fall in, remain as calm as possible. While attempting to get out of the water, call for help. Anyone who attempts to rescue you should use a rope or something similar to avoid falling through themselves.

– Do not travel in unfamiliar areas or at night.

Here's some interesting information for all you bird watchers and nature lovers!

The City of Oconto contains three segments of the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail and a designated Important Bird Area to include the Oconto Harbor, Oconto Marsh and Rush Point

The Oconto Marsh & Rush Point Refuge is located just north of the City of Oconto on the west shore of Green Bay. Covering more than 800 acres, the marsh is an area rich in bird life, which includes: Wood Ducks, Ring-neck Ducks, Snowy Owl, Scoters and many, many more. It also encompasses a state waterfowl sanctuary and a breeding ground for the Yellow-headed Blackbird. Uncommon birds such as Acadian Flycatchers and Cerulean Warblers can also be found here.

The city has also established a series of bluebird trails. All the trails have boxes located at the following locations: Copper Culture State Park, Holtwood Sporting Complex, Beyer Home Museum, Aurora and Prevea, Farnsworth Public Library, Irish Greens Golf Course, City Park, Oconto Sportsman Club and 4 private locations.

In addition, Oconto citizens count cranes for the Annual Midwest Crane Count in 3 sites within the city limits.

In 2016 Bird City Oconto reported for the first time to the Purple Martin Association. There are 2 sites, Oconto City Park & City Dock, with 4 houses and 56 nesting compartments. In 2022, 142 martins where raised and banded.

Bird City Oconto also holds wood duck houses at the Copper Culture State Park that are monitored and reported on.

Flicker and Woodpecker housing were established in 2017 at Copper Culture State Park, Sharp Park and City Park.
