The Kalapana Lava Viewing Area will be closed for the duration of Today 4/20/17 due to poor air quality. The Kalapana Lava Viewing area will reopen tomorrow weather permitting. But the Hawaii's Volcano National Park will still remain open. Mahalo!

The County Kalapana Lava Viewing Area will be open today New Years Eve and Also New Years Day. A lot of spattering at the ocean entry. You can't beat natures fireworks.

Lava Viewing has been perfect the last few days. Picture perfect sunsets with cascading lava falls entering the ocean. Merry Christmas everyone and come on down and visit the most phenomenal events happening right now in this world.

Really wet Sunday but viewing was still spectacular. Tomorrow will be a lot better as for the weather. The walk from the Kalapana side is just about 4.5 miles (7km) each way and 9 miles(14km) round trip. By hiking you are looking at 1hr and 45mins each way but by bike you are looking at just around 30mins each way. Bring close toe shoes and a lot of water. Roughly a liter per person. Bike Rental company recommended would be Kalapana Lava Bike Rentals. Number to reach them at would 808-796-0768. I would recommend reserving your bike 12hrs before taking the trek.
