HEADS UP! Saharan Dust is projected to move across parts of Florida and the Gulf of Mexico later this week into the weekend.

Most of the dust is aloft at 5,000 - 15,000 feet in the atmosphere as it travels over 5,000 miles across the Atlantic. Saharan Dust is nothing new, we just now have better technology to detect and forecast it. On average, over 180 million tons of dust is blown aloft from Africa each year. Here's a refresher on Saharan Dust pros and cons:

Positives:
- Can weaken tropical systems and lower activity because the dry Saharan air layer contains 50% lower humidity.
- Vibrant sunrises and sunsets with an extra glow.
- Iron in the dust helps fertilize the Amazon. It also feeds phytoplankton in the ocean, which takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.

Negatives:
- Lowers air quality and can aggravate those with respiratory issues or asthma.
- Hazy skies and dirty rain. Fewer storms, but they can be stronger. Hotter weather.
- The dust can transport bacteria, which can lead to algal blooms like red tide. Also has been known to negatively impact coral reefs.

Nesting Update: June 21, 2024

This week we saw the number of greens double from last week.

You can help the survive by keeping the beach

1. Keep artificial light from reaching the beach. This includes lights from cellphones, fishing lanterns, and flashlights, etc. Pull draperies at sunset.

2. Remove furniture and any other potential obstructions from the beach -- off of the sand-- by sunset. Sea turtles need every inch of sand for nesting.

3. Fill holes and pick up trash. Trash includes picnic scraps and other food scraps. These scraps bring potential predators to the beach. We will have hatchlings soon, and they need to have the best chance at survival.

4. If you see a dead or struggling sea turtle, call FWC Wildlife Alert 888.404.3922 to initiate stranding response.

NESTING UPDATE JUNE 14, 2024

It's been an interesting week...

Bad weather created some challenges that kept us on our toes. The rain was most welcomed because it has been so very dry.

Turtlers are a dedicated lot - we are like the postal service.

"neither rain, nor wind nor heat will keep a turtler from their appointed rounds" πŸ˜€

The blustery weather brought a small, rare, critically endangered visitor to Manasota Key. You will see in this week's nesting graphic the addition of a Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii). If you missed it, please see our post about it from a few days ago.

Many thanks to Manasota Key Resort for alerting us to a daytime nesting turtle. . If you see a daytime nesting turtle, Please send us a photo to help us identify the species.

Other ways you can help

Sea turtle season has officially begun! Here are are two fun facts to celebrate these magnificent creatures:

1. Ancient Mariners. Sea turtles have been around for over 100 million years, which means they once swam alongside dinosaurs!

2.Global Travelers. Some sea turtles migrate over 1,500 miles between their feeding grounds and the beaches where they nest. Talk about a long-distance relationship!

Let’s keep our beaches clean, dim our lights at night during nesting season, and give these ancient travelers the space they need to continue their incredible journey.

Enjoy the beach and keep an eye out for these incredible creatures!

GULF HEATING UP 🌊🌑️ For the first time this year, water temps have reached the 80s along the Southwest Florida coast. The Fort Myers Beach water temp of 80° is +1.3° warmer than normal. I'll continue to monitor it for you in the months ahead.
