We are green with envy, Cannon Beach! Puffins AND fireworks free July!

This seabird watching event, sponsored by the Friends of Haystack Rock, is part of a fireworks-free celebration in Cannon Beach. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be available for the public to view these magnificent birds up close, along with bird enthusiasts to help you find the tufted puffins and inform you about all of the seabirds nesting on Haystack Rock.

Friends of Haystack Rock (FOHR) promotes the preservation and protection of the intertidal life and birds that inhabit the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. We do this in cooperation with Haystack Rock Awareness Program, other partners, and the community.

Haystack Rock is home to a Tufted Puffin breeding colony in Oregon. In early April puffins show up at Haystack Rock. Most of the puffins have already found their lifelong partners and are returning to the same protected burrow they used last year to raise their young. The Tufted Puffins will spend about 16 weeks at the Rock. For the first couple weeks the puffins stake out their territory and clean up their burrow. Once their burrow is ready, the female puffin will lay a single, chicken-sized egg, which both the male and female incubate. Incubation usually lasts 41-54 days. Though usually tucked back inside the burrow, newly hatched puffins appear at the Rock beginning in late June through mid to late August. Despite the fact that you may not be able to see the pufflings, activity around the rock is hectic and plentiful: it is fun to observe the parent puffins making multiple trips to their burrow with bills full of fish for their young. 38 to 59 days after hatching the pufflings will leave their burrows. Under the protection of darkness (to escape the ever-watchful, hungry eyes of bald eagles), all the pufflings will leave the safety of the rock and return to the open ocean, where they will spend the winter.

Tufted Puffins struggle with inadvertently ingesting ocean plastic, getting caught and drowning in gill-nets, and protecting their burrows from introduced mammalian predators such as foxes and rats. Since the mid-1990s, Tufted Puffin populations in Oregon and Washington have plummeted more than 95 percent.

During this event you are likely to also see the myriad of other sea birds nesting and/or residing at Haystack Rock including common murres, pigeon guillemots, cormorants, and black oystercatchers.

I miss my Dad dearly, and know he would have loved to spend the day today knocking off a dozen projects off my to do list out here on the coast.

I’m standing here watching this and still have no idea how this team of kite fliers do this! My favorite part of the #kitefestival every year.

Love a sunset that lights up the clouds like this. We try to never miss a sunset out here because of what we had tonight. Clear skies all day, then some clouds started rolling in early evening. The perfect conditions for a beautiful sunset.

The best colors consistently hit after the sun is down. Great soft clouds tonight.

This afternoon’s high tide of 6.3’ seemed more like 9.5’ the way the surf was running up the rocks. Seems to be a bit of a surge in place from the last few days? #newmoontide

The eagles were out doing some fishing this afternoon.

Juneuary right on schedule. Atmospheric river rolling through that’s dropped 1.5” of rain so far today. A great day to run and see @riverbendplayers latest show for a matinee then early dinner at the Big Wave. Time to hunker down tonight!

Clouds cleared, wind calmed, and a lovely evening arrived.

A good old fashioned rainy coastal day. 1.5” today, with wind and rain continuing.

A calm ocean and warm temperatures wrap the day in a sunset. A great day to be outside doing spring projects.

A #greenflash tonight that unfortunately doesn’t show on video. The sun is setting so far north already! Temps get into mid and upper 60s the next few days, and hopefully a bit less wind.

The heat wasn’t on all day. A nice day on the coast.

Sun is on spring break in Rockaway these past several days. This morning was beautiful, and even this afternoon remains relatively warm.

Great spring clouds rolling in tonight. If we were in Nebraska I’d be checking the weather for severe weather. Since it’s oregon, we won’t walk for about an hour to allow these clouds to move through.
