First sea turtle nest of the year!

We have a gopher tortoise that lives in our dune!
04/12/2024

We have a gopher tortoise that lives in our dune!

April 10 is Gopher Tortoise Day! While not our beloved sea turtles, gopher tortoises play an incredibly important role in our ecosystem as a keystone species.

A keystone species has a disproportionately large effect on its natural environment relative to its abundance, and is sometimes considered the 'glue' that helps hold the ecosystem together. Over 350 known species utilize gopher tortoise burrows, including burrowing owls, Florida mice, snakes, rabbits, gopher frogs and countless invertebrates.

These burrows are an underground sanctuary, averaging 15 feet in length and 6.5 feet in depth, offering critical protection for the tortoise and other species seeking refuge from extreme temperatures, drought, fires, and predators.

We are fortunate to see gopher tortoises regularly on patrol as they live in the dune ecosystem along our beaches (in addition to dry habitats throughout the State).

If you see an active gopher tortoise on the beach, it's best to leave them be. They will occasionally wander to the shoreline to cool off in the water or to use the seawater to help remove parasites, but rest assured they know what they are doing. 🐢
