Exciting changes coming to Seven Oaks May 1st:

Seven Oaks Womens Center is pleased to announce we are transitioning to a new EMR (Electronic Medical Record) system! This new system is specific to the needs of an OB/GYN practice, so not only will it improve our ability to provide the best care for our patients, it will also offer an improved experience for you! Don't worry - all of your patient records will be safely and securely converted to the new system and you will still be able to reach us during implementation.

The transition will begin May 1, 2024. We are sharing this with you now because you may notice a few issues while the new system is implemented. Please be patient with our staff and providers as we will all be learning this new system together. You may notice it takes a little bit longer to schedule an appointment, or a visit may take longer than is typical as we adjust to new screens and workflows. You may also experience a slight delay in requests for forms or prescriptions.

We will have limited appointments available the first two weeks of May due to training on the new system. We ask for your help in reserving non-urgent calls and requests for a later date.

Please note our current patient portal will not be accessible as of May 1st, 2024. You may register for your new patient portal by downloading the “APPatient” app on your cell phone. You will need our URL to complete your registration: sevenoakswomens.ema.md

You will also be receiving reminder & appointment confirmation messages from our new communication provider, Klara.

In the meantime, we ask that you call the office with any major questions or concerns. We will keep you updated throughout the process on our website and social media. Thank you again for your patience during this transition, we look forward to serving you.

To conclude our series…
Let’s talk about treatment!

Unfortunately there is no cure for endometriosis. Treatment of this condition is focused on pain management and symptom relief through a variety of measures.

💥Pain
Pain is most often managed with a class of medications called NSAIDs which block release of prostaglandins, one of the main chemicals responsible for pain in general as well as painful periods. These include Ibuprofen and Naproxen. NSAIDs alone may not provide complete relief and often work best when combined with hormonal therapies.

💊Hormone Therapy
Hormonal birth control methods, including oral pills, patches, vaginal rings, and progestin-containing IUDS are often helpful in treating pain because they reduce or prevent menstrual bleeding.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) "agonists" (Lupron) and "antagonists” (Orilissa) cause the ovaries to temporarily stop producing estrogen. This causes the endometriosis tissue to shrink. This treatment reduces pain in over 80% of people, including those with severe pain. Side effects can include hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, insomnia, and bone loss, but can be mitigated with hormonal “add-back” therapy.

🏥Surgery
Surgery is considered when medications do not work well enough to relieve pain and can often be done laparoscopically. The goal is to remove endometriosis and scar tissue. However, surgery is not a permanent cure, and there is a chance that the endometriosis tissue will eventually grow back and pain will return unless you take some form of treatment after surgery, such as hormonal birth control.

❣️Treatment for endometriosis is not a “one size fits all” and patients often need a combination of therapies to achieve symptom relief.

Continuing our series… what IS endometriosis? It is where endometrial cells from the lining of the uterus are implanted and grow outside of the uterus. Implants can occur almost anywhere but most commonly are on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or peritoneum, which lines the abdomen and pelvis. Most believe this is due to retrograde menstruation, where some of the menstrual fluid flows back through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis. In response to your natural hormonal cycles, these implants then grow and attempt to shed, just like normal endometrial tissue should. This can cause pelvic pain as well as scar tissue on the affected areas.

Signs concerning for endometriosis are chronic pelvic pain pain (especially when on your menstrual cycle), pain during in*******se, pain with bowel movements, and infertility. Your provider may recommend an ultrasound to evaluate these symptoms, however it is important to know that the only way to confirm endometriosis with with surgery.

To confirm, your doctor will typically perform a surgery called a diagnostic laparoscopy, where a small camera is introduced into the abdomen. Then the abdomen and pelvis are thoroughly inspected for any lesions, which are either removed or burned. Any removed lesions are sent to a pathologist to confirm endometriosis under the microscope.
