Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

In 1996, Zachry was awarded a contract to build the 1.5-mile-long, 285-foot-high West Dam at the Diamond Valley Reservoir in Southern California – the largest earthmoving project in the United States at the time. The project team excavated more than 60 million cubic yards of earth for the approach channel and dam foundation, and 70 million cubic yards of rock for the dam embankment. The Reservoir, now known as Diamond Valley Lake, increased Southern California’s surface water storage capacity by more than 800,000 acre-feet. It can store up to a six-month emergency water supply and provides supplemental water during droughts and peak summer usage.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

H.B. Zachry shifted paradigms in 1992 when they became responsible for 100% of the subcontracts for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a power project in Pittsylvania County. The plant was powered by locally sourced wood chips and believed to be the largest wood-burning power plant in the world at that time. With many rewards and risks at stake, Zachry successfully completed the project with a diverse group of subcontractors ahead of a tight schedule.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

In 1987, Zachry constructed the Point Arguello Oil and Gas Processing Plant in Santa Barbara, California. The project had a unique and interesting set of circumstances surrounding its construction. The placement of a processing facility in a natural environment presented several intricate design challenges, and Zachry implemented many precautions to address them. Eucalyptus trees were left intact so as not to disturb the migratory path of the Monarch butterfly, and a member of the local Indian community was present in case any artifacts were unearthed during excavation.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

Zachry was contracted in a joint venture to help build sections of the monumental Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. These sections extended from Prudhoe Bay to just south of the Dietrich River in the Brooks Range, a total distance of 223 miles. Work sometimes had to be done in temperatures of minus 50 to minus 75 degrees with heavy snow and high winds. The pipeline would be the largest privately owned construction project at the time and one of H.B. Zachry Company’s most challenging projects due to the freezing weather conditions.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

The Paseo Del Rio Hotel was built by H.B Zachry Company in an astonishing 202 working days, just in time for the 1968 World’s Fair. Traditional construction methods would not allow the hotel to be completed in the short timeframe available before the fair's opening, so alternative methods were explored. H.B Zachry Company utilized conventional reinforced concrete to build the first 4 floors; the fifth floor to the 20th were stacked up modules. All guest rooms of the hotel were constructed as modular units, complete with furnishings, lighting, and even artwork. The structure is notable for being a milestone in the use of modular building construction techniques.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

In February 1965, H.B. Zachry Company began its first venture in Europe, constructing Spain’s first nuclear power plant. The company confronted several environmental and political problems, compounded by its partnership with local subcontractors accustomed to using primitive construction methods. Despite facing numerous challenges, H.B. Zachry Company completed the project on schedule in 1968 and received recognition in multiple publications for its achievement.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

H.B. Zachry Company embarked on its first major project overseas in 1959, a $3.2 million joint venture supported by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This supported the Nike Zeus Project to develop a new antiballistic missile system that included interceptor and radar tracking systems. The Nike Zeus project at Kwajalein, part of the Marshall Islands, was a success for H.B. Zachry Company. The technology was later integrated into other projects being developed in Kwajalein.

In 1953, H.B. Zachry Company achieved a significant milestone by commencing construction on Unit II of the W.B. Tuttle Steam Power Plant in San Antonio, its first turnkey power plant project. The project was an important symbol of where the company - and the country – were headed, with a focus on energy.

Our Zachry team at Chevron Phillips Chemical in Baytown, TX, received the highest contractor safety honor, the President’s Contractor Safety Award. The team achieved two consecutive years without a recordable injury, totaling over 1.5 million safe hours at the site. Congratulations to the team for their exceptional safety leadership and performance.

Historical Highlights: 100 Years of Zachry

Henry Bartell “Pat” Zachry earned his first opportunity in construction when Webb County officials asked to design a plan for paving a dirt road connecting Laredo to Corpus Christi. The Highway Department soon took over the project and on his father’s advice, he resigned and founded his own company, H.B. Zachry Company of Laredo in 1924. Pat successfully bid and secured a contract for a segment of the highway project he had been actively involved in – a $40,000 bridge.
