DISCOVER AT CABRILLO: Explore the fascinating history of the Fresnel lens exhibited in the Assistant Keeper's Quarters at Cabrillo National Monument. πŸ’‘πŸ

The Fresnel lens on display here was once active in the New Point Loma Lighthouse, established in 1891. Located at a lower elevation closer to sea level, this new lighthouse was built to mitigate the heavy fog that often obscured the light from the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. Once the New Point Loma Lighthouse was constructed, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse was decommissioned, eventually becoming the historic exhibit it is today.

The lens used in the new lighthouse was classified as a third-order, flashing Fresnel lens, distinguished by its unique flashing pattern that appears as illuminated spokes when viewed from a distance. Invented by Augustin-Jean Fresnel in the early 19th century, this lens revolutionized lighthouse technology by using a structure of concentric rings of prisms to focus light into bright, far-reaching beams.

In 2001, the original lens was replaced with a modern Vega rotating beacon, and soon after, it was placed on display in the Assistant Keeper's Quarters. Today, the beautifully crafted lens stands as a tribute to the legacy of maritime safety and the preservation of maritime heritage at Cabrillo National Monument. 🌊πŸ›₯

Since 1994, the fourth Saturday of September has been recognized as National Public Lands Day--aka the largest national single-day volunteer effort to clean-up, restore, and preserve public lands of all shapes and sizes. β˜€πŸŒπŸŒ±

Today and everyday, CNMF extends our deepest gratitude to the dedicated volunteers that donate their time to making Cabrillo the beautiful, preserved, and enriching place we know and love. The number of volunteer hours at the park are equivalent that of 7 full-time employees! That is a staggering number that demonstrates just how vital volunteer efforts are at Cabrillo.

This National Public Lands Day, we invite you to explore volunteer opportunities at our local public lands, and join the community of San Diegans who steward our parks, trails, preserves, and natural resources for future generations to love and enjoy. πŸ’›πŸ¦‹

Although Cabrillo is often busiest in the summertime, fall and winter are actually some of the most exciting times to visit the park! πŸ‚β›…πŸ

Here are some highlights to look forward to in the coming months at the park:

πŸŒ‡Sunsets: In the summer, the park has already long-closed by the time the sun dips below the horizon. Luckily, in November and December the sun sets *just* early enough that visitors can experience golden hour at one of the best sunset watching spots in San Diego -- Cabrillo National Monument!

πŸͺΈTidepools: Late fall and winter are the best seasons for tidepooling at the park. Extreme low and negative tides happen during park hours, rather than in the middle of the night like in the summer, allowing visitors to spot the adorable critters living in the tidepools. Just make sure to check the tide calendar for low tide times before you head out as they vary every day.

πŸ‹ Whale Watching: From late December through mid-March, Pacific grey whales pass through the waters offshore from Cabrillo National Monument. This incredible journey takes them approximately 12,000 miles from Alaska to their breeding grounds in Baja California. Visitors can catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures from the park's Whale Watch Overlook.

🌾Hiking: As temperatures cool down, fall is the ideal time to explore the trails at Cabrillo National Monument. With three great options, spend some time outside enjoying the fall blooms and cool ocean air at the park.

MOVE AT CABRILLO: Have you witnessed the impressive dives of the California brown pelican at Cabrillo National Monument?

Differentiating themselves from all other pelican species, the California brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is a plunge diver. The pelican often dives from 10 to 30 feet above the ocean surface, but they are capable of diving from as high as 100 feet. The deeper the prey, the higher the pelican dives from -- utilizing their body mass and gravity to plunge them deep into the water.

Pictured here, the pelican moves gracefully above the ocean, looking to pinpoint their next meal below the ocean's surface. When a potential meal is spotted, the pelican tips their body downward and their wings spread into a upright 'v' position. As soon as their bill hits the water, they instantly thrust back their wings and legs, and stretch their pouch open wide to scoop up the fish. As the pelican surfaces, they expertly tip their head forward, letting the excess water drain out while keeping the fish secured in pouch. They then toss back their head and swallow their catch. 🌊🐟

Pay close attention next time you see a California brown pelican flying above the ocean at Cabrillo and you might get to see it's special dive!

BREATHE AT CABRILLO: What's that smell?

It's California Sagebrush (Artemisia californica)! Known colloquially as "Cowboy Cologne" due to the strong aroma that lingers on clothes and fingertips when the leaves are crushed or brushed up against. California Sagebrush is one species within the coastal sage scrub plant community that can be seen along the hillsides at Cabrillo. πŸŒΎπŸŒΏπŸƒ

If you visited the park this summer, you might have noticed that some of the scrubland habitat seemed dry or even deadβ€”but fear not! These well-adapted plants are skilled at conserving water. Some sage scrub species have wax-covered leaves that prevent water loss through pores, some drop their leaves entirely to prevent moisture loss, and still others dry-up and go completely dormant, sustaining themselves until the first winter rains revive these hardy plants. πŸ’™πŸŒ§

REMEMBER AT CABRILLO: Before Cabrillo became a National Park and popular tourist destination, the park was home to numerous different families.

The photo shows the kitchen inside the living quarters of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, staged to reflect how the keepers and their families might have used the space in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Although the Old Point Loma Lighthouse was in service for only 36 years, it saw 11 principal keepers and 22 assistant keepers come and go. The high turnover of keepers and assistant keepers was likely impacted by low pay, isolation, distance from town, and difficulties with water collection.

Over time, additional structures were added around the lighthouse to make life easier for the keepers' families, including a barn, a chicken coop, a wood/oil shed, additional cisterns, a garden, and a catch basin.

Would you have wanted to be a lighthouse keeper at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse? πŸ’

REMEMBER AT CABRILLO: Cabrillo National Monument was established as a National Park in 1913, but it wasn't until 1959 that it began to take shape as the beloved site we know today.

The National Park Service's Mission 66 Program was a nationwide effort to revitalize and modernize national parks after World War II. Coinciding with the rise in availability of affordable cars and increasing income, visitation to National Park units surged from 17 million in 1940 to 56 million in 1956.

Mission 66 provided Cabrillo National Monument with the funding and support necessary to construct an all-new visitor center, overlook terraces, parking lots, pedestrian pathways, and roadways. The visitor center that stands today reflects many of the aesthetic principles of Mission 66, including large windows, earth-toned concrete, and overall harmony with the natural surroundings. πŸŒΎπŸƒ

DISCOVER AT CABRILLO: Why was the Old Point Loma Lighthouse decommissioned after only 36 years?

Perched 422 feet (129 meters) above sea level at the tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, the location chosen for the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in 1854 was thought to be ideal because the light could be seen from both the ocean and bay sides. However, after less than 36 years in operation, the lighthouse was shut down due to a lack of visibility. It turned out the staggering height of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse made it difficult to see the light at all when foggy --and if you've ever visited Cabrillo, you know we are no stranger to fog! 🌫πŸŒ₯

Today, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse illuminates history at our park. If you are interested in exploring the top tower of the lighthouse and seeing the replica lens up-close (pictured here), visit the park this Sunday, August 25th, for Open Tower Day!

DISCOVER AT CABRILLO: Views from atop the Old Point Loma Lighthouse... β›΅πŸŒΎ

Our treasured lighthouse will once again be open to the public this Sunday, August 25th, for Open Tower Day! Occurring just three times per year, this event grants visitors the special opportunity to access the top tower of the lighthouse.

Glimpse into life at this lighthouse station from 1855 to 1891 as you wander through the lighthouse grounds and kitchen garden, explore the living quarters of the lighthouse keeper and family, and experience the sweeping views and intricate lens atop the tower! πŸ’‘πŸŒŠ

All visitors must register for a 30-minute tour time at the ticketing table near the lighthouse to participate. Tickets will be available on the day of the event, first come, first served. The guided tours are the only way to access the top tower of the lighthouse and will occur between 10:00 am - 3:30 pm. We recommend coming early to reserve your time as this is a popular event!

MOVE AT CABRILLO: One of our favorite ways to get moving is to take a walk or run along our beautiful park trails! 🌿πŸ₯Ύ With three different options, here are some tips to help you choose the right trail(s) for you:

🌊 Oceanside Trail: The newest addition to Cabrillo's trail system, this approximately 1-mile round trip takes visitors between the upper park area and the tidepools.
To hike this trail, you can park in the upper lot, hike down to the tidepools, and then hike back up to your car -- OR -- you can park in the lower tidepool lot, hike up to the upper park area, and then hike back down to your car.

This hike is strenuous with a steep gradient, so bring plenty of water and sun protection. There are benches along the trail where you can take breaks and soak up the panoramic views! β˜€οΈ

πŸͺΈCoastal Trail: Looking for something more leisurely? This 1-mile round trip meanders through lush coastal vegetation along the west-side of the peninsula.
To access this trail, park in Lot 1 or Lot 2 in the lower tidepool area of the park. You can also hike down the Oceanside Trail from the upper park area, and then take the Coastal Trail.

The Coastal Trail is an easy to moderate hike with a few steep slopes and steps. It runs right along the coastline, and intersects with the entrance to the tidepools near Lot 1. Enjoy the ocean breeze and tidepool access by taking the Coastal Trail!

βš“ Bayside Trail: This 2.5-mile round-trip offers breathtaking views of the Bay and Downtown. Immerse yourself in the unique Coastal Sage Scrub habitat, and keep an eye out for migratory birds using the Point Loma Peninsula as a stopover on the Pacific Flyway.

To access this trail, walk up the paved road from the Visitor Center, bearing left. Look our for the Bayside Trail sign just before the Old Point Loma Lighthouse.
This hike is suitable for all skill levels, though the uphill return can be challenging. Bring water, as there is no shade, but benches are available along the way to enjoy the panoramic views! 🐦🌼

MOVE AT CABRILLO: What do you notice most when taking a walk around the park?

🌼The vibrant yellow petals of the Sea Dahlia?
🌿The sweet herbal scent of coastal sage scrub?
🐦The kitten-like, mewing call of the California Gnatcatcher?
πŸ•ΈThe hidden burrow of a trapdoor spider?

There are so many small wonders to explore. Come take a walk around the park, and pay extra attention to the life flourishing all around--you might notice something new!

BREATHE AT CABRILLO: The Kelp Forest and Whale Watch Overlook is one of the highest peaks at the park, and a phenomenal vantage point to observe the Rocky Intertidal Zone, Underwater Kelp Forest, and Marine Wildlife while breathing in the fresh air. 🌊πŸͺΈ

Growing in the Rocky Intertidal Zone just 25 to 70 feet off the shore is a thriving forest of specialized Brown Algae known as Giant Kelp (Macrocysitis Pxritera). The Giant Kelp is rooted to the ocean floor, but grows toward the surface, reaching upward as high as 150 ft. forming a dense canopy right below the surface that can be spotted from the overlook (NPS). Enjoy the lush kelp forests and shade in the summer heat, and visit again in January for the chance to spot a migrating Pacific grey whale! πŸ‹

BREATHE AT CABRILLO: With an estimated 200 native plant species at Cabrillo National Monument, the sweeping hillsides at the park are a mosaic of vibrant petals, sweet-scented sage, and towering grasses. πŸŒΎπŸƒπŸŒΏ

Pictured here is one of our beloved native species, the Giant Wild Rye (Leymus condensatus). The leaves of this native grass reach three to four feet in height, and the flower stalks reach up to eight feet or more, thus earning the Giant Wild Rye it's name!

Not only is this native grass beautiful, but it is important in maintaining in the integrity of our hillsides, as the underground roots provide erosion control. 🌱

Have you seen the Giant Wild Rye at the park? πŸ”
