One of the coolest parts of taking people to kayak and dive adventures at Channel Islands National Park is the wildlife encounters we have along the way! Deckhand, Evan, caught this amazing drone footage of the Sunfish sighting a pod of Risso’s dolphins yesterday on the way to Anacapa Island!
Risso's dolphins feed almost exclusively on squid. They don’t require cutting teeth to process their cephalopod prey, which has allowed the species to evolve teeth as display weapons in mating conflicts. You can see clearly in this video the white scars covering their bodies; scarring is a common feature of male to male competition in toothed whales, but Risso's dolphin tend to be unusually heavily scarred. #CIEx #whalewatching
