Ever wanted to learn the secrets of stone masonry that brought Opus 40 to life? Join us for an Introduction to Dry Stone Building on November 20th, link in bio!! ⚒🌿 - Teaching himself as he goes, Harvey Fite employs the techniques of dry stone masonry, or dry key construction, the ancient building method that he observed while working in Copan. The process of dry key construction involves laying flat pieces of stone, one on top of another, with large stone “keys” placed horizontally at strategic intervals throughout the walls for stability. This is all done without use of mortar or cement, which allows the stones to breath and shift, allowing water to pass through and not freeze, which could damage the stone. With proper maintenance, Opus 40 could last for thousands of years.

There are extant examples of dry stone walls and structures that date back more than 5,000 years. In County Mayo, Ireland, an entire field system made from dry stone walls, since covered in peat, have been carbon-dated to 3,800 BC.

Fite uses stone as he finds it in the piles on his property, only chiseling it as needed to fit a space. He notes that he is learning by trail and “lots of error.”
